Bumper stickers I'm sick and tired of seeing

Bumper stickers I'm sick and tired of seeing

Postby crevice beatle » Thu Jan 08, 2009 6:10 pm

It seems all the reasons I love Madison are pretty much the same as the reasons I sometimes loathe it. Insightful bumper stickers seasoned across vehicles all over the east side is one of those reasons. To add to the irony it seems the bumper stickers with messages I generally agree with are the exact same ones that start to annoy the hell out of me when I see them everywhere I go. So, at risk of offending anyone who has this particular message on the rear of their vehicle, I offer the first sticker that should stand trial:

I always think it says "Canoeist" whenever I see it.

I only saw this one once but it really pissed me off

Those "My dog is smarter than your honor student" ones are also pretty stupid.

However, the ones the kids and I look for are Obama stickers on a Prius. It's part of a game we play on road trips.

The irony is that a woman with a "Coexist" bumper sticker nearly ran me off the road the other night.

Coexist must have a number of different meanings — such as "me first."

Maybe not so surprising, actually.

There was a study this summer from CSU that found that people with stickers, decals, etc. on their cars tend to act more aggressively on the road. The supposed explanation for this is that people who personalize their cars tend to see their car (and the space around their car on the road) as extensions of their own "territory".

Watch out for cars with bumper stickers.

That's the surprising conclusion of a recent study [...]. Drivers of cars with bumper stickers, window decals, personalized license plates and other "territorial markers" [...] are far more likely than those who do not personalize their cars to use their vehicles to express rage -- by honking, tailgating and other aggressive behavior.

It does not seem to matter whether the messages on the stickers are about peace and love -- "Visualize World Peace," "My Kid Is an Honor Student" -- or angry and in your face -- "Don't Mess With Texas," "My Kid Beat Up Your Honor Student."

[...]

Drivers who do not personalize their cars get angry, too, Szlemko and his colleagues concluded in a paper they recently published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, but they don't act out their anger. They fume, mentally call the other driver a jerk, and move on.

"The more markers a car has, the more aggressively the person tends to drive when provoked," Szlemko said. "Just the presence of territory markers predicts the tendency to be an aggressive driver."

[... lots more interesting stuff ...]

How about:

"I'd rather be a conservative nut job than a liberal with no nuts and no job."

The other day I rode behind a pickup truck with these stickers: " I (heart) waterboarding", "McCain-Palin" & "I'm raising my kids right" (this one had a large elephant with 3 little ones, all pointing right). I'm okay with two of them, but the "I heart waterboarding" one was disturbing.

I kept my distance from the guy - figured if he loves the idea of torturing people then running someone off the road would be even more fun.

I thought that was odd... until I read the next sentence and realized (duh) that the guy wasn't professing his love for wakeboarding.

While I've never seen this particular bumper sticker around, I agree, it's tedious.

Sorry, I couldn't find a picture of it and I'm not really sick and tired of seeing it, but there's a purple and white one out there.

It's designed in such a way that at a distance, my mind mistakenly reads it as: I would rather be breastfeeding.

The ones I AM sick and tired of have the word "fuck" in them, any subject covered.

Dude, there are kids out here. Why do you have to be the one to make a parent explain that word to their kid?

Yeah, great...thanks alot. I just spent the last 45 minutes watching Asylum Street Spankers videos instead of shoveling my sidewalk.

Stickers like that entertain me when I pictured them being mouthed by Stephen Colbert.
