Your favorite website ten years ago

Postby jjoyce » Thu Feb 05, 2009 5:12 pm

Do you remember what it was?

I know that one of my top five remains so today: kottke.org. Others are less active than they were so they're off the radar. I used to read salon.com daily and now rarely visit.

About ten years ago, we debuted a new TDP design (I had been on board for about two months) that ushered in a new message board, but it was still a couple years before Forum, as it is today more or less, was born.

Do porn sites count? Sublimedirectory.com hasn't changed since I was 16.

suck.com

I miss it. Some of the funniest stuff I've ever read on the web.

suck.com

For giving us "urban hipster" and so much more. The IT gestapo from my company at the time came 'round demanding who was going to "this suck.com" site, assuming it was some kind of porn.

Suck.com was the best ever. I could barely wait for the new Filler every week. Made me a Heather Havrilesky fan for life.

I think I was reading Salon religiously then too.

And CDnow had a really handy database...

Probably the only one that I use[d] frequently both now and then is the Internet Movie Database.

Webmonkey.com for web design info then, HTMLDog and A List Apart now.

For e-commerce, Amazon.com both then and now.

Can't think of any others. And if a cache were to exist somewhere that could show me what sites I was looking at 10 years ago, I'm pretty sure I don't want to know about it.

wired.com was read quite a bit - now I never go there. Not sure why, though.
And memepool.com was a great resource for the quirky stuff on the web. now it is hardly ever updated.

And it has to be close to 10 years now that zombo.com started up. And it is still going strong. You can do anything you want at zombocom. Anything!

Suck, no question. I was also a big fan of Feed and Word, and to be honest I have no clue what their URLs were.

I used to spend a lot of time at some laserdisc forums/websites/newsgroups. Otherwise, mostly eBay. This year marks the 10 year anniversary of my web business, back when it was a tiny notepad file my cousin hosted for free.

I am pretty sure it was Stileproject around then for me. VERY NSFW.

It was before the porn became so prominent on his site. If you clicked on a link that promised nudity, you were as likely to end up staring at some horrific tumorous growth, or goatse, as anything else.

Back then, his site used to go offline now and then due to not being able to pay the bills for traffic etc. Then he started adding porn ads, and from that point it was online all the time.
