Is DPF activity down?

Postby supaunknown » Mon Feb 23, 2009 3:34 pm

Is DPF activity down or what? It used to be that I could refresh for the latest posts and have a whole slab of new uns to read. Nowadays it seems like hardly anybody is around. Has almost the entire foronic demographic gravitated 'round the corner to Facebook?
Am I wrong? It just seems like with 1000+ DPF users that they'd be more than 18 fresh posts this Monday ...

Supaunknown is wondering where the hell the action's at.

I made the same comment yesterday.

I think its been down since the election. I haven't been as excited to post here myself. We're just in the off season. be back for 2010.

Maybe the recent activity calls for more desperate measures than a thread about inactivity. What we need is a sheppy-like presence demanding sex and vampire scandal. Or you could start some discussions on gaming Ship. I'll join in the fun.

I have a few completely non-scientific reasons for thinking that it's been declining for a couple of years now, with a spike for the election season.

Blame it on the economy. People are more fearful of posting at work because when it comes time to cut an employee who are they going to ax? The snarky dude who spends 6 hours a day posting on the dailypage forum or the do-good brown-noser who is always pointing out how busy they are to the boss?

AV's wing nut ugly posts confuse people into thinking that they have mistakenly navigated to madison.com.

The Vilas Zoo chimpanzee got to him. I think we know now who the true enemy of H. Sapiens is.

There are a number of factors:

- It's cyclical. We've always seen lots of activity around elections and slow periods as well.

- Social networking in the form of Facebook, Twitter and any number of other sites are using up more of people's time. Eight years ago, we didn't have all that competition for online dinking around time.

- Rabbit's partially right, but I think it has more to do with smaller staffs = more work = less Forum time. I think workplaces are paying more attention to efficiency and going as far as monitoring web usage among employees.

- We've lost a few big personalities in the last year, members who attracted traffic. I'm confident that others will emerge.

Forum traffic is down a bit over previous years, but it remains a very popular part of the site.

Isthmus is no longer cool.
A lot do with poor editorial direction, historically clueless writers, and loss of key staff.
Other online venues are more interesting and interactive.
Personally, I get much more satisfaction elsewhere and have received several interesting creative project offers.
Never happened here.
The gatekeepers here seem disconnected, deaf to their audience, and unresponsive to their peers.
The daily page site and Isthmus newspaper should be much more aligned and interactive. One seems to have no knowledge or respect for the other.
The continuing smug ignor/arrogance and we-know-better-than-you routine of Isthmus is beginning to chaff.

What's more ignor/arrogant? Mistaking chaff for chafe in a post criticizing writers/editors or pointing it out?

Chaff is just as fitting as chafe in blunt's post. Unintended double entendre?

Either way, it seems the readers get it. I'm guessing that's the unsharpened point.

Blunt is like that. By definition.

You're right, Renee. The readers do get it now. At least one does. One freshly laundered bunnysuit just snapped towels with another one on its way into the cleaners.

See ya on Facebook.
