Going to Portland. Any Ideas?

We want to hear about your adventures, be they from Istanbul, Ixtapa or Ixonia. And hey, you might even find someone you can sell your extra Euros to.

Going to Portland. Any Ideas?

Postby fisticuffs » Mon May 04, 2009 11:47 am

Leaving on Thursday and will have all day Friday to sight see and grab a nice meal. Itinerary Saturday is shopping, a nice dinner somewhere downtown and the Richard Cheese at Dante's. Any thoughts on Dinner? How to spend my Friday?

It's been 10 years since I visited Portland, Oregon. The most memorable part of my visit was going to the Monet exhibit at the Portland Museum of Art, which obviously has long since moved on, but it is a nice facility.

You need to check out the Bagdad Theater & Pub, if for no other reason than the outside shot has been in several movies and is bound to be again.

The only other restaurant I remember is Hamburger Mary's, but I just checked their website and that location has closed.

Portland is a beautiful city, make sure to check out the the southeast/Hawthorne Neighborhood. That's the uber liberal, hippie and hipster part of town. If I remember the northeast part of the city is where all the big old money houses are, beautiful neighborhood to walk. When I visited, it was in November and the rainy season was in full swing, it was anywhere between a mist to a drizzle to downpour the whole week I was there. I didn't mind because I was visiting my boyfriend at the time and a travel agent friend had given me a free ticket. Good luck and have fun in your travels.

Cool place. Doesn't look like its too far from Dante's. Maybe grab a drink there afterwards. They are having a film festival Fri and Sat probably able to stop in for a brew without seeing a show I would hope. Yeah I have no idea where my friend lives out there that I'm staying with but if I had to put money on it it would be the hippie/hipster area.

Here's a little wiki entry on Hawthorne Neighborhood.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawthorne, ... nd,_Oregon

The Bagdad is on Hawthorne so you will be in that neighborhood.

Like beer? There's a McMenamin Bros. (sp?) place downtown that's under the Crystal Ballroom (also excellent), has a bunch of pool tables, some good beer and is generally pretty fun.

They're all about the ales out there, which might serve as a warning depending on your tastes.

Downtown - grab a doughnut and get a beer/play some video games - or catch a show there.

Record shopping?
http://www.greennoiserecords.com/
Note: the good local stores keep listings of all the great record stores for a nice record store crawl you can do.
and there's a thrift store called "HOUSE" up by greennoise (they can tell you how to get there) that quite franky... If I could have rented a van and driven back with all the crap I wanted out of that place, I would have in an instant.

I love Portland.
Have a blast.

Yeah I didnt intend to shop a lot probably part ways with the ladies for that few hours. Although Im intrigued by the thrift store. Maybe even get hitched at VooDoo Doughnut. Eh not worth upsetting the family. Now if they had Elvis doing the ceremony IN the doughnut shop that would be worth it.

Yep, McMenamin's is good. Voodoo has to be on the list, as does Powell's. Get out to the coast, hit Cannon Beach. Good clam chowder.

Second the vote for Cannon Beach. If the tide's out, you can almost get out to Haystack Rock. Check Beer Advocate or Pubcrawler.com if you want to check out the best of the many craft beer venues in the area.

I grant it's been a while since I've been out there, but is it really no longer an easy stroll at low tide? Because it used to be.

Inspect the light-rail mass transit system. Report back. Remember, Madison aspires to be Portland jr. in all things.
