Forum's lackluster layout

Postby Dairylander » Tue Jun 16, 2009 7:25 pm

Okay, so you go to main page of the forum, a.k.a. "board Index", and it goes like this:

Category / # of topics / # of posts / name & date of last poster.
For example:
Town Vibe / 756 / 13719 / by HeyZeus June 16...

Who cares how many topics and posts an entire category has?
The space on that line between the category and the last poster should show the title of the thread that HeyZeus commented on, for example:

Town Vibe / Single in Madison / by HeyZeus June 16...

This way, one can browse what threads are currently being talked about right from the main page without entering a category.
This is how most other forums are laid out, and I think it's much more user-friendly.
Here's an example:

The "view new posts" link is my friend.

Log in. Click "view new posts." Set as a book mark. Put it in the browser tool bar. Viola. All new posts since the last time I looked at the forum.

Doesn't get much more user friendly than that.

Tables of Contents don't normally list the first sentence of each chapter. I think the site you're looking for is here: madison.com

The layout at TDPF encourages the reader to find the best way of many different ways to get the content he/she wants. Didn't take me long to find my way back when I was a newbie.

I've been reading this forum long enough to know that this is a thinly veiled insult, so fuck you too.
I merely suggested replacing useless information with useful information. Sorry that I tried to contribute.

It was a thinly-veiled just-giving-you-a-hard-time. Whoa nellie.

Look at Chainsaw's reply - constructive advice for the new guy on how to better navigate the forum.
Then look at BookPolice - "Don't like it here? Then go away."
And you guys wonder why the DP forum activity is trending down...

Are you this mad? Really? I APOLOGIZE. Sincerely. I was teasing you, and should have included some kind of winkie emoticon or picture of a LOLcat to assure you that I welcome your contribution to TDPF and don't want you to go anywhere.

I do think that the TDP powers that be should increase the width of the body of tdp.com. More people are getting widescreen monitors -- esp. notebooks -- and the amount of white space around the edges is definitely starting to show.

Nope, not mad at all. I just thought your first apology was less than sincere due to your "Woah nellie" comment which implied that I was overreacting.
The only problem here is that as a newbie I couldn't tell if you're that funny sarcastic guy or just a dick...
(Not that I've made up my mind either way...)
And as useful as they may be, I can't bring myself to put those stupid emoticon faces on posts. It makes me feel like a tween.
Truce.

Dairylander, great advice. I'm not in here that often, but "View New Posts" is a great way to catch stuff you've missed. For newbies, it takes some getting used to, when you're looking through all the different threads for the first time.

A word of warning, sanctimony is BP's best friend. Just so you know.

To the powers that be - it appears the photo bar is stuck on that silver, Quonset hut type building. I tried viewing it in three different browsers, with the same results.

Have a great day.

I second, or third I suppose, bookmarking the view new posts page. Haven't seen the front page of this site in months. Although I do have some RSS feeds set up.

Still right here, y'know.

And if you want sanctimony, I could respond with "Yes, I'm sure that any decline in TDPF traffic is solely my fault." I could even throw a  in there for you if you'd like.

Thanks guys.
Also, where's the button that indicates "I like this post" or "I agree" or "thanks for the post" or "rate this positively".
It's another common and useful function; people can show support and consensus without having to add an entire new post.

I think those ratings systems are meaningless and useless. If you want to add to the conversation then do it. Clicking a thumbs up may make you feel good but it doesn't do the forum any good.
