American Apparel Ads

Postby psycho » Thu Jun 18, 2009 5:58 pm

Surely I can't be the only reader who finds the American Apparel ads on the back page offensive. This week's borders on soft-core porn. Can't you find some other advertiser to fill that space?

I can't say that I was particularly offended, but I did jokingly point it out to my husband saying "here's your weekly American Apparel porn". The owner of the company is certainly a creepy dude.

I'm not a prude, but those ads just weird me out. They're slick and national, look just as cheap and skeevy as their founder, and apparently aim for the elusive Tara Lipinski demographic. Basically, they just seem completely out of line with what the rest of the paper is about.

I mean, we might be cheap and skeevy, but by gum, we'll do it locally!

I won't argue that these ads are a positive contribution to society, but to bitch and moan about something like this is akin to yelling at those damn neighbor kids to get off your lawn.

So ... what? You're saying we've got to organize?

Worst of all (for me), they put me off of a company that I would otherwise be totally rooting for:

Sweatshop-free apparel manufacturing in the U.S. providing jobs paying a living wage? Hell yeah!

Providing jobs offering an up-close and personal view of your company's founder masturbating? Um, no thanks.

Geez, it's working. You made me go turn my copy of Isthmus over to see what everybody's talking about.

All I can say is poor Eliana needs a shirt and some underpants.

I appreciate their general business model, but I must say that stepping into the State St location was quite possibly the most awkward "shopping" experience of my life. Completely silent (what, is it more indie to not be playing indie music?). Couple random hipsters wandering around. No greeting from "staff" (or maybe they were customers...). Couldn't differentiate between male/female clothing. Plenty of spandex and lame' in every rack. This is what it must have felt like as a minority to take a voting test around the turn of the century.

Their t-shirts are comfy, though, if you can find one without a deep V- or D-neck.

I suppose one could resort to DNA testing. Me, I just have a surreptitious sniff.

Actually, when I stopped by I thought it felt like an incredibly well-organized yet low-end Goodwill. Everything I kinda liked was about eight sizes too small, thinking about how I'd look in some of it made me feel grody, and I'd never, ever wear most of it except on Halloween.

Their 50/25/25 blend Tee is the most perfect article of clothing on the planet. Too bad they are like $25 for a freakin Tee shirt! Whatever you think about the perv owner or the graphic ads they make great quality stuff (your taste may very on the style) and they make it here.

I live in AA long sleeve tees during the cool nights of summer and my AA track jacket with the Isthmus 30th anniversary logo is still in steady rotation three years after it was made.

But their regular tees emphasize a part of this Midwestern Scandinavian's anatomy that I'd rather not emphasize.

I wonder if Eliana accepts work as a nanny/housekeeper.
