Your Favorite Clint Eastwood Movies

Postby MadMind » Fri Jun 19, 2009 12:16 am

In celebration of the DVD release of Gran Torino, Clint's latest film, what are some of your favorite Clint Eastwood flicks over the years?

I haven't yet seen Gran Torino but am looking forward to it, and though I'd take a little time to refresh my memory on some past favorites.
I kicked it off with two Clint Eastwood starred & directed westerns which both have supernatural overtones, High Plains Drifter and Pale Rider.

Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo, just caught it again on cable a few days ago. The scene at the end in which Blondie makes the guy stand on the tombstone with a noose around his neck while loading up the gold is awesome. He starts to ride away, then turns his mount, pulls out his rifle and shoots through the noose to free him.

And of course the Ennio Morricone (sp?) score is solid gold.

Unforgiven, obviously. One of the greatest westerns ever made.

Pale Rider was pretty good too, although nowhere near the same level. Kind of a 'Shane meets The Crow' sort of vibe.

And I really liked In the Line of Fire, although that had as much to do with Malkovich's unbelievably creepy yet somehow sympathetic assassin as it did Clint. Although Clint's really good in it.

I've always been partial to the original "Dirty Harry."

And I really liked "A Perfect World." Eastwood's role is limited, but the movie reminds me of the Springsteen song, "Nebraska," which I like quite a bit.

Never particularly been an Eastwood fan, but I would vote for Play Misty For Me, but primarily because of Jessica Walter's fantastic performance.

I always thought Fatal Attraction was just a remake of Misty.

I'll throw out a few no one ever mentions when talking about how great Eastwood is...

1968's Where Eagles Dare, because everyone hates Nazis.
1979's Escape From Alcatraz because it's essentially a heist movie procedural (which I love) and because Patrick McGoohan is the shit.
1968's Coogan's Bluff because any film with a psychedelic club called The Pigeon-Toed Orange Peel is alright with me.

Now, cue supaunknown with a Paint Your Wagon joke...

I'm a sucker Heartbreak Ridge. Not a perfect movie (the ending sucks), but Clint is flat-out hilarious as Gunney Highway. I also enjoy Firefox. *ducks*

Bronco Billy is great.

The Dirty Harry movies are enjoyable but kind of hit or miss.

I like the two Philo Beddo movies.

And yeah, Unforgiven is one of the best westerns ever made. Hackman!

And and oh oh yeah, I heard he made a bunch of westerns about spagetti ...

Not a big fan of Kelly's Heroes or Million Dollar Baby.

"I can't believe they killed Gene Hackman!": my buddy's (somehow) completely unintentional Homeresque outburst to a few friends that hadn't seen the movie yet. He still hasn't lived that one down.

No love for Every Which Way But Loose? The man co-starred with an orangutan, for God's sake!
