$2 burger special

Where are you eating and what do you think? What's opening, closing, succeeding, failing?

$2 burger special

My recent $2 Tuesday burger special at The Local was the worst hamburger ever. Not only was it small and overcooked, it tasted like they'd put maybe dry onion soup mix in the meat.

You were expecting a good burger for $2?

At Culver's, yes.

This just in: the $.79 tacos at Taco Bell aren't anything special. I've had better.

Well, it's a *special*, which is supposed to suggest "a burger we would ordinarily price higher than this, that today we are offering at a bargain price."

In my experience with restaurant lingo, "special" typically means, "here's something we have available today that isn't on our regular, everyday menu".

It doesn't necessarily, or even often, mean "here's an everyday menu item at a reduced price".

To me, a restaurant "special" means don't order me.

And the Local means "don't come here."

Excellent. That just means there's more of it for me.

Some of the best food I've had in local restaurants have been daily specials. Sometimes they even get onto the regular menu with enough requests.

I have had the same experience. In many restaurants, the special is a way for them to try something creative, and even test the waters for upcoming menu items. It could also be repeated weekly for promotional purposes, which I imagine was what the original poster was expecting.

However, I have been to a few restaurants that will run something that's regularly on their menu, maybe with a little different preparation, as their special. I'm reminded of a horror story about a local bar serving "hot dog soup". Use your better judgement to order a special. Is it something that sounds delicious and fresh, or is it old, expiring product or worse, illegally used leftovers from an event?

The real question should be "how special is the special?"
