Google Wave

Postby fisticuffs » Thu Dec 17, 2009 1:43 pm

Anyone using it? I've got maybe 7 contacts and none of them seem to be using it for anything. Without something more interesting to get me logged in often I don't think I'll be using it either. I do have a few invites though if anyone wants to wave at me.

For as hyped as it was, I have found nothing about it that really seems all that useful. Or even geeky enough to be fun to play with.

That demo video using the Ezekiel scene from Pulp Fiction makes the resulting Wave product look like a Geocities website circa 1996. I don't get the appeal or the usefulness.

It is hard to get your head around, but I find it helpful to think of Wave as a re-imagining of email with collaborative real-time editing and multimedia support.

I think anyone who is forced to use Outlook* probably understands how badly broken email is--think of an email chain where more and more people get cc'd and the email gets chopped up into finer and finer pieces with people eventually color-coding their responses and meaning leaking out with each reply--so it's clear someone needs to do this work.

It isn't going to be Microsoft. Whatever you think of Wave, at least Google is trying.

* I use a number of email clients and probably my favorite is Pine, which can be highly customized--that is to say, you can fix what's broken about email in general--but I do have to use Outlook, which is quite definitely the worst piece of software I have to touch on a regular basis. It is a stunningly, amazingly stupid application.

I think of it more as IM on steroids than as an email replacement. Although I suppose it could be either, really. But it does seem that it will require a sea change from consumers before it takes off. I don't disagree that most email clients suck, but the limitations of Wave seem to make it more a solution in search of a (different) problem.

I agree. It's going to help some groups who commit to using it, but you're probably not going to be Waving grandma anytime soon.

I've tried it out a bit and conceive of great uses for it, but it doesn't seem to have a "light" usage capability. If you're not using it for all it can be, it's rather cumbersome.

But I totally agree with the last part of what I quoted from you, Adam. Bless Google's electronic hearts ... they try so many things that a few are bound to flop, but ultimately they have produced several products that have been lifechangers. And so much for FREE! So glad they have found a model that allows for the masses to use their products freely (ad-supported) and only charge power-users and some businesses.
