Digital/3D Cinema Has Come To Wisconsin

Postby MadMind » Fri Nov 16, 2007 8:35 pm

And just like that, digital cinema arrives in Wisconsin/Madison.
Theaters across the country are really pushing Beowulf in 3D.
Marcus Ridge in New Berlin (suburban Milwaukee), Marcus Point in Madison, and Sundance 608 (did they have a digital screen from the very start?) are now equipped with Dolby Digital Cinema - all 3 theaters with 3D capabilities.

I thought it was interesting how Marcus and Sundance went with Dolby's Digital 3D format over Real D. I wonder how they compare?
And what I'd really like to hear are comparison's of Beowulf in IMAX 3D versus digital 3D.

I have no idea how they compare but I saw Beowulf at Sundance tonight, oh ... my... god...

Wonderful.

And I am not a big fan of angelina but I have to say, naked and 3d, not too bad.

Saw Beowulf in IMAX 3D last night. The 3D was awesome, in your face, pop out of the screen, action.
I'll be especially interested to see how the first live-action 3D film comes out. I know that's more difficult to pull off than computer animated sequences.

No they installed it a couple weeks prior to the movie starting.

So, the first two live-action films to be in digital 3-D are... Hannah Montana In Concert, and U2 In Concert. Not exactly what I had in mind.
Journey 3D (the Journey to the center of the earth redo with Brendan Fraser) will probably be the first live-action film in digital 3D from hollywood, but I think most of the 3D effects are going to be coming from CGI add-ins rather than from the live-action component.

don't pooh-pooh the U2 movie until you see it.
It's amazing, even if you don't like the music.

I didn't mean to poo-poo it or lump it in with Hannah Montana. I like me some U2, I was just referring to live-action hollywood type films.

10-4. I'm over U2 these days but the cinematography in this film is excellent and is only enhanced by the 3D.

Why is Journey To The Center Of The Earth not playing in IMAX 3D at Star Cinema?

Nevermind. I emailed Star Cinema and got the answer.
Unlike Beowulf, IMAX format was not available for Journey. It was made in Regular format and Real-D format (Digital).

I heard that Point Cinema and Sundance switched from Dolby 3D over to Real-D. Can anyone confirm or deny?

Wondering whether to see Avatar in IMAX 3D or digital 3D?
Here's an interesting article;

From WSJ; Marcus Theatres adding digital 3D systems
Marcus Theatres will expand its digital 3D projection with the installation of 37 RealD 3D Cinema Systems in theaters throughout the Midwest, including additional screens at Point Cinema and Eastgate Cinema in Madison.

That brings Marcus Theatres' digital 3D capability up to 103 screens in 44 locations in seven states.

The company plans to install the additional screens in time for the May 20 opening of "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides."

I'm kinda surprised that Marcus is continuing to invest in Eastgate when they are planning to tear it down and relocate to Sun Prairie (which I think is stupid btw). Obviously that plan has been delayed on account of the economy, but is it altogether scrapped?
