Ya big fuckin' crybaby.

Original question was "Have you given up on updating this?"

Thats a passive-aggressive, whiny complaint about Madison Miscellany?

Sorry didn't see this thread before I replied to the spam.

Couldn't you just block that whole part of the world from registering?

Or, as was suggested a while ago, why not have a "waiting period" of a day or so before a new account can post?

Or a 10-day reply-only hiatus before one can create a new thread, or a minimum requirement for posts of any kind before creating a new thread ...
The solution doesn't need to be airtight, only sufficiently inconvenient to divert the zombies to easier prey.

How about if, in order to create a new account, you have to take and pass a test on Madison, Wisconsin, and US trivia and pop-culture idiocy:
What nightclub next to a comedy club burnt down?
Who made furniture out of his former neighbors?
Who's the newest racing sausage?
The annoying piccolo player wears what color?
etc... You get the idea.

The Comic Strip was not a comedy club.

I think you could get rid of half the spam by disallowing usernames to be in ALLCAPS.

You couldn't have guessed that IPHONESTRADE might have an agenda???

Reminds me of the "Time to make the donuts" guy.

Jason, this is getting utterly ridiculous. What's the deal? You haven't given a good reason for why you don't require moderator approval for posts from new accounts.

I started Madison Freecycle, and by the time I stepped down, it had several thousand members. Still, we (me and several co-moderators) found time to filter posts from new accounts, to ensure that there weren't spam posts.

TDPF is a tiny fraction of Madison Freecycle, in terms of posts per day. You can do this, Jason.

I'm all for assertive moderation, but really -- these postings that come in bunches from all-caps accounts advertising free electronics, does anyone click them?

I think waiting til Monday morning to clean house is OK.

A lot of those spam user accounts are created on the weekends. If it's OK to wait until Monday to delete spam posts, then don't approve newly created accounts until Monday either.

And why not give some limited delete permission to some longtime forons? Does anyone really think snoqueen, Henry Vilas or Walter would abuse the ability to delete spam posts? They check in on a regular basis, so why not give a couple of trusted forons the ability to patrol the neighborhood when the sheriff has the weekend off?
