Hammerin' Hank says it best

Postby Henry Vilas » Thu Apr 08, 2010 8:06 pm

I grew up in Milwaukee and my childhood hero was Hank Aaron. His critique of modern day baseball is spot on, from the emphasis on the home run, pitching philosophy, the reasons behind the length of game, and the dangers due to the economic inequality among owners.

I was raised in southeast Wisconsin too and remember the Milwaukee Braves well, especially the year they won the pennant. I was in third grade. When the final play came over the radio (we'd been listening in our classrooms) it was such a big deal they let us all go home early.

I enjoyed the Henry Aaron interview you linked to. He was every little kid's hero back then and hasn't let us down yet. A great athlete and a true gentleman.

But the inequalities in sports only mirrors the inequality in society, it's fair to point out. You've got your rich few, and you've got everybody else. The 1950's were about as different from the 2010's as you can get.

This was not what I expected, based on the thread title. I thought it was gonna be the Hamming Hank who worked in a butcher shop.

The amusement value was well worth it. Seriously, Hank Aaron has always been a class act, one of the few genuine superstars who exhibits the nearly lost value of sportsmanship.
