Water tower fire causes TDS broadband outage

Postby Shorty » Tue May 18, 2010 3:45 pm

It says 147 TDS fixed wireless broadband customers on Madison’s West Side are now without service. I don't know what fixed wireless means. Thankfully, TDS is letting them get out of their contract for free to switch providers.

That wasn't much help. The first link to wikipedia is a lengthy article with these 13 topics and their subtopics. II don't have the time nor background knowledge to read and understand that. If you could tell me what fixed wireless means in one or two sentences I may be interested, but that wasn't the main topic of my post.

* 1 Terminology
* 2 Uses
o 2.1 For Broadband
o 2.2 For Back-haul
o 2.3 For Triple-Play
o 2.4 For Rapid Deployment
* 3 Connecting to WiMAX

o 3.2 WiMAX Dongles
o 3.3 WiMAX Mobiles
* 4 Technical information

o 4.2 Physical layer
o 4.3 MAC (data link) layer
o 4.4 Deployment
o 4.5 Integration with an IP-based network
o 4.6 Spectrum allocation
o 4.7 Spectral efficiency
o 4.8 Inherent Limitations

Broadband wireless internet. TDS uses the WiMAX protocol. It's fixed since the service area is limited (unlike cell phones) and is meant to be used for at-home access as opposed to mobile access. The reason the 147 are without service is that the antennas were based on the WT and there are no backup options now that the site is down.

I'm one of those 147 people, and I'm really going to miss my TDS WiMax. The water tower was my signal source, but it got destroyed in the fire. The city of Madison isn't allowing TDS to go near the tower for months, so they can't fix the WiMax transmitter. I had to find a new internet provider. TDS probably isn't going to fix the transmitter since all of the customers are going to be switching and TDS has discontinued WiMax expansion. Unfortunately, I think my AT&T cell tower was also in the water tower since my signal has been horrid ever since the fire.

Yeah, you got hit on both counts. If I recall correctly the carriers on that tank were Einstein, AT&T and Sprint, though Sprint may have come off prior to the fire for the tank painting. I believe AT&T is rushing to get a temporary cell set up to fill the gap, but you're unfortunately in for a spell of shitty reception until they can get it up and running.
