Vientiane Lao-Thai restaraunt reopened?

Postby Huckleby » Sun May 23, 2010 10:15 am

I really loved the Lao-Thai restaraunt on Park Street that closed about a month ago. Somebody said it may have reopened on the East Side, maybe Sherman Avenue. Any spottings?

I thought that place was terrible! don't they have a location on Regent, too?

That's an offshoot of the Vientiane Palace on Gorham. The one on Park is/was owned by relatives of the Gorham/Regent St. locations. I prefer the Palace myself. The restaurant on Park St. was very uneven. Bland food, chewy squid.

Yes, they're in the building occupied longest (I think) by Gaston's, on Sherman Ave. just west of Fordem.

(Google Street View)

I haven't been to it in old location or new, so no opinion about their food.

The Vientiane restaurants all pretty-much use the same recipes.

I think the food at Park St. was excellent, although there were some off nights when the main cook wasn't manning the range. The owner of now Sherman Ave. place is quite a character, lots of stories.

OK, thanks. That's the house converted into restaraunt. I never made it to Gaston's, wasn't that cajun? I liked the restaraunt that was there before, the mexican joint. Anyplace that has an outdoor eating area gets 5 bonus points.

Ate there Tuesday night. It was good. I had basil pork, my wife had basil chicken (I know, not much variety, we'll mix it up for you guys next time). I thought the pork was better than the chicken. Service was good although I sense a bit of "not quite got our groove on yet" vibe, but they haven't been open in that location long. The staff was very friendly & it was nice on the patio.

We'll be back.

The husband and I ate there tonight! :)

It was fabulous. The sauce for the chicken satay definitely had strong plum notes, not so peanut-y for a change.

The pad thai was among the best I've ever had, and the #20 curry with chicken was spectacular. I'd have liked a little bit more soupy sauce in the bottom of the dish, but that was my only complaint! Our meal was accompanied by a huuuge bowl of rice.

We did two stars for spice, which was hot enough to make my lips tingle, but not so hot it was hard to eat.

I really hope that business is good, because I'm gonna love having this restaurant in the neighborhood!!

All the Vientiane's are great.

I've been hitting up the Regent Street location since the Park Street one moved. Yes, Regent and Gorham are more closely associated....

Alright, I'm intrigued. But I'm also confused. Too many locations mentioned here for me to track (Regent, Park, Gorham, Sherman), so I'll just ask.

Where is this place (currently)? The old Gaston's?

It's always a good idea--and I mean always, repeatedly, often--to check the Isthmus Eats list.

The old Gaston's location is the only one, to my knowledge, that isn't open.

I thought that place looked empty. So, where's the small seedy location with the motherly figure?

I think they're both pretty small and debatably seedy, but the no-nonsense resto-mom holds court at the Gorham location, if I recall correctly.

EDIT: Which I don't, apparently. See next page.
