I miss folkways cafe on willy st.

And as a child I used to go to the restaurant in the basement of renneboms hilldale, I think I liked because they server chocolate cream pie (or was that bishops buffet by westgate)

You mean Pasqual's, by the Barrymore? I miss it, but there are so many other good food places in the same area it's hard to complain.

To add to the ancient history subsection of this topic:

Dolly's Restaurant, open at all hours of the night, located where St.
Vinnie's bookstore is now.

And Rennebohm's! They had this great chili with macaroni in it. I wish I had some right this minute.

And even more ancient: Anybody remember the Green Lantern dining coop in the basement of the building next to the 602 Club (now Wando's)? Very early ancestor of the food coops of the '60s.

The Simon House on South Butler was where the daycare place is. It had really fancy booths. I remember the White House sandwich. I think it was similar to the one they serve at Paisans with turkey on toast points and baked in the oven. But they also served au gratin potatoes. Does anyone do that anymore. It used to be an standard option.
Another was Nob Hill. Never went there but as a kid I would imagine how swank it was.

Knob Hill wasn't too swank, but it had the great view you would expect. I can't even remember the food.

Also could have been the taco place (Taco Hut?) that is now the left half of Tex Tubb's. (I think)

I miss the look of Paul's Club before the redo.

And at this point in my life I would appreciate the Barber's Closet so much more than I did before it was a big gas station.

The late-night spots at the Hotel Washington -- the Hot L Cafe and The Palms.

Crandall's (site of the current Tornado Room)

Brown's Restaurant on West Gilman at State

The Library

Edwardo's

Wilson Street Grill

And, does anyone remember Andrea's before it was L'Etoile?

Thanks you for listing Deb and Lola's. So very good.

Yes, have to agree Deb and Lola's was really nice. Did a Middle Eastern restaurant go in there briefly afterwards? I also have a vague recollection of an Indo-Pakistani restaurant on State (?).

This thread has reminded me of so many places I hadn't thought of in years. How about Caspian Cafe?

How about King Street Café, in the old Porto Bananas spot? Had some great meals there before it moved and became Mad City Café in Ovens' old spot on State.

Edwardo,s pizza.

That stuffed pizza was soooo good. I always thought the sauce was little more that puree's marinara, but i wonder if they put MSG in it...
It's been out of Madison for a while, but it is still around in Milwaukee I think....

We really shouldn't be bitching, there are so many great restaurants to choose from now. They open and close before I can get to them. I was sorry to lose El Pescador. I was only there once, but the calamari was the best.
