Always Good

Where are you eating and what do you think? What's opening, closing, succeeding, failing?

Always Good

Postby swoon_queen » Fri Jun 25, 2010 2:07 pm

Boyfriend and I ate at Jacs on Monroe the other night. We had the Mediterranean flatbread-- fresh garlic, fresh mozzarella, crushed tomatoes, basil--to start, and split the night's special (a surf and turf served with bacon green beans and potato pancakes). They kindly put the entree on two plates for us, though we hadn't asked, and also gave us a [free] extra shrimp so that we'd each have the same number (3). At the end of the meal, after we paid the bill (less than $50 including a bottle of half-priced wine) my bf commented that he was putting Jacs on his "always good" list. We've been there for dinner, lunch, and brunch, and consistently had great experiences with the food, service, and the sense that the prices are totally and completely reasonable. My young daughter has accompanied us a few times and been pleased as well. There aren't a whole lot of places one can say that about-- or are there?

I got to thinking what else I would put on that list. Old Fashioned comes to mind right away, though its long waits can preempt a weekend visit (can't wait until their expansion); any other consistently, all around "good" places?

Old Fashioned expanding? I think you've just scooped us.

Brasserie V falls into the "always good" category for me. I have yet to partake of a full dinner meal (as opposed to bar starters and drinks) at Sardine, but brunch, lunch, and bar have all been exemplary so far, as was their Burgers and Brew entry last year (mmm...rhubarb). And I think I probably have to put Antojitos El Toril in there, too, though it's been a few months since I was there last.

It's true. "The other side of the internet" (i.e. Laptop City Hall and Dane101) reported on the ALRC proceedings about it.

oooh! Good to know-- I always forget about Lombardino's and this kicks it up to a must go. On that note, Greenbush is a pretty great all around experience, though I much prefer its cozy confines on a winter night.

i'm with you about jacs. i put taqueria guadelajara on that list, and porky pine pete's. i used to think that way about greenbush but their gorgonzola cream pasta has gone south for me in recent years.

My first meal there was 24 years ago and I've yet to get a bad meal. Solid. Consistent. The standard for this thread.

Himal Chuli fer sure. One bowl of brown rice, another bowl of dal. Totally basic and always good, especially in the winter.

This place fits the title more than any other. Never once had a less than excellent meal there.

When I starting reading this thread, the first place that popped in my head was Himal Chuli. Their dal is perfect every time.
