Old Stereo Refurb?

Postby MadMind75 » Sat Jul 31, 2010 12:27 am

Just curious, does anyplace refurb old stereos?
I have an 30+ yr old Sony AM/FM/LP with speakers where the only thing wrong with it are the inside "connections" for lack of a better term. Speakers are good, record player still good, but when you switch functions you get crackle and sometimes you have to jiggle the switch back and forth to get sound through both speakers.
I'd kinda hate to throw it out, but I will if there's no hope for it.

Sounds like the pots/switches need cleaning.

Unplug it, remove the knobs, spray electrical contact cleaner so it goes down into the pot/switch and work that mother 50x.

All it will cost you is like $3.59 for the cleaner and a few minutes.

Hopefully you know this do not touch the transformer or any capacitors. Even if it's unplugged it can still retain a charge that will discharge if you provide a path to the ground.

Definitely. I should have said don't open up the guts, just spray the cleaner in/on the shaft of the pot or switch and let it flow in there from the outside of the control panel.

The can of cleaner should have a thin straw taped to the can that will help.

I learned this about capacitors the hard way, monkeying around with an old computer when I was ten or eleven.
