Any danger to buying used ipods on craigslist?

Postby seashells » Sun Aug 22, 2010 2:35 pm

Would it be a wise move or a foolish one to buy, say, a 8gb nano on craigslist? My first guess is that people are upgrading and there's nothing wrong with the older nanos they're selling, but I could be wrong. Your thoughts?

I've bought at least one iPod nano that way, with no worries. YMMV of course.

Just that the battery might be losing it or the clickwheel messed up. You can reset the thing back to factory state with the iTunes SW. You won't be listnening to any of dude's tunes for free anyway, because the authorization on it moves to a new user - you.

Oh and it might be hot - bad karma.

Unless the purchaser knew it was stolen the bad karma wouldn't transfer with the sale, the bad karma will stay with the one who stole it. The only other way bad karma would transfer in the sale would be if the rightful owner practiced black magic (a.k.a Voodoo) and put a curse on anyone who possesses the ipod.

The greatest danger's that it's a sting from Attorney General J. B. Van Hollen''s Internet Crimes Against Childrens' Task Force, selling you a unit pre-loaded with kiddy porn. Merely erasing all data's not enough to protect you, you've got to thoroughly degauss the memory.

Okay, I confess that voodoo spells and undercover kiddy porn stings never occurred to me. Anything that could, you know, actually happen?

No.

Well, there's the mp3 viruses that infect your computer and turn it into an internet attack bot, steal your credit card information and register your street address at sex clubs, but the chances of that happening are really slim.

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

A used ipod may need to be reformatted to work with your PC.

I dig the Princess Bride reference, but an mp3 can't contain a viral payload. It's not executable code, thus my above statement.

You'd need a horribly written codec to pass anything other than audio from the file. Something even worse than quicktime.
