When Univ Ave construction is done

What are the things that puzzle, enrage, delight and tickle you as you go about your life in Madison?

It's all smooth sailing around there now.

But when that target opens, it is going to be a mess.

I wonder if drivers will have to exit on Segoe in order to get out of Target, if University is backed up. I don't think anything has been said about reworking traffic lights.

The development plan doesn't have Target Hilldale opening until Fall 2011. There's probably time to monitor traffic patterns considering the redeveloped University Ave, and then worry about cutting curbs and installing supplemental lights accordingly.

Target not opening til Fall 2011? Seems odd that it would take a whole year to build a store like that. The outside looks practically done.

There must be a lot of work to build one of thoses out. Looks like they have the outside done, so at least they can work inside to fit it out.

I forsee more lights being neccesary to avoid the aforementioned 'gammonization'.

But boy oh boy is it smooth driving.

But I did get stuck behind what appeared to be a mad accident at Midvale and Univ ave at around 5:30 last night.

Okay, here's my thing. I agree that it's much, much better. But does it seem to anyone else like a less-than-stellar repave? The lanes aren't very well-integrated, and it still feels a little rippled.

And what's up with the major height differences? The lanes were stripped to bare bones, so why not level the whole deal? The curbs on the median look--I'm sorry--like papier-mâché. It's like they weren't allowed to cure properly before being exposed to the elements.

It just doesn't look as good as other blacktop renovations (say, Reiner Rd.) or curb-to-curb wholesale renovations (Monona Dr., Main St. in Sun Prairie). But maybe that's just me.

Sounds like they haven't put the final surface layer of asphalt down yet. The asphalt has to be at or above a certain temperature when it hits the paver, so they may choose to wait until a warmer day or wait until spring.

No, I'm pretty sure everything's down. The road is level with the curb aprons.

Or maybe they just did a crappy job...

If the concrete of the curb is level with the ashpalt surface, and if the manhole covers in the roadway are also level with the surface, they're done. I haven't driven down there since last week, and the manholes were still sticking up then....

I thought the same thing when I drove down University, "there must be another level coming". But there's not.

I'm far from an asphalt expert but for some reason the finished project looks sloppy and cheap. I hope it fairs well for years to come but I have my doubts...

Yeah, the last few times I crossed over, I wonder how long it's going to be before it all deteriorates. Maybe they just did a so-so job, until the economy picks up...

Oh no, I missed the completion celebration taking place this morning. I am not making this up either, Mayor Dave was to speak to the cheering masses in the Noodles and Co. Parking lot about the accomplishment.

There's a big sign on Target saying:

Opening March 6

Yes, yes--you and my wife can both revel in rubbing my nose in it.

As a matter of fact, they apparently did a crappy enough job that the city is going to make them repave it...
