Xmas Drinks

Postby rrnate » Thu Dec 16, 2010 2:22 pm

Can you give me some examples of what you would consider to be an excellent Xmas drink? I'm having some out-of-towners over post-Xmas and the plan is to get blotto/stinko/etc.

I'd like to have the fixings for delicious (non-eggnog) dranks a plenty and I know that the Forum's collective wisdom could help enlighten me. Guide me!

Pabst or Old Style. Just put a red ribbon on the cans or something.

Tom and Jerry's
Peppermint Patty's
Chocolate Turtle
Hot Buttered Rum
Hot Toddy's

And I'll share my invention: The Holiday Old Fashioned

Muddle Sugar, fresh Cranberries, and Mint Leaves, and quick spash of seltzer in an old fashioned glass

Add a decent shot of Gin, then ice3

Shake or stir

top with Tonic and a splash or cranberry juice

Garnish with a couple of mint leaves and a cranberry (put together so they look like mistletoe)

Merry Drunkmas!

Mulled wine, aka glögg. If you've never had it, it's available at the bar at the Orpheum.

Irish coffee.

Hot cocoa with schnapps of your choice, usually peppermint.

1 oz good quality Gin
1 Oz Ginger Beer
6 oz Trader Joe's Pomegranate carbonated juice.
Dash of Roses Lime Juice.

This was a hit at a recent holiday party of mine. Easy too.

Seconded. My wife's family is from Sweden and this is a mainstay around our house come holiday time. We buy the pre-packaged spice mix (way too hard to find, but always at Katy's in Cambridge. I'll assume it can be found in Mt. Horeb somewhere. I live in Stoughton, so I checked there; no dice. Nada at Century House either. Penzey's Spice place or whatever it's called on University had never heard of it).

I don't have the family recipe off the top of my head, but it includes said spice mix, Port Wine, Bourbon, Aquavit and Everclear. Yeah, it'll get ya drunk.

Tom and Jerrys, but make them Wisconsin style - more liquor than eggnog. (I always thought that was how they were supposed to be, but I guess we tend to have a little higher tolerance here in the Badger state?)

The New York Times has an article on their website with a bunch of recipes for holiday drinks. I have also gotten good recipes from Imbibe magazine, you could check their web site. This is from one of their recipes:

Applejack rabbit
2 oz apple brandy
2/3 oz maple syrup
3/4 oz lemon juice
3/4 oz orange juice

Shake well. We made this with Yahara Bay apple brandy and it was yummy.

My favorites for this time of year, although not specifically holiday drinks:

Red Hook
2 oz rye
1/2 oz sweet vermouth
1/2 oz luxardo maraschino

Louisiana cocktail
3/4 oz rye
3/4 oz sweet vermouth
3/4 oz benedictine
3 dash pernod
3 dash peychaud's bitters

Personally, I am a big fan of St. Germain. Just add some sparkling white wine, and you're set. It's also tasty to mix in a bit of Chambord or other fruity liqueur. Don't know how "holiday" that is, but it's good.

The warm drinks are defiantly a favorite of mine this time of year, but seriously nothing makes me more fa, la, la, la shiny and bright than a Cosmo. Always in season.

If you want to keep it easy:

2 shots of everclear and then mix anything you want. It won't matter after that point.
