Old Sugar Distillery

Okay, I'll do my part to save the booze forum.

I don't think this place has been mentioned in the forum yet.

It's on East Main behind the Mautz property. I went for the first time last night and it's a very cool little spot. Small menu of craft cocktails made with their products. I recommend the Gringo.

Ditto the Gringo.

Also, Cane and Abe rum, rocks.

I think I saw they've got picnic tables out on the sidewalk now?

Thank you very much. I had no idea that place was there and it's within walking distance. We'll definitely check it out this weekend.

Thanks for the reminder. You know how there's some place that you always intend to visit and somehow never quite get around to it? That place is mine. I've heard nothing but good things about it.

Swung by yesterday and tried a Honey-Cap, their version of the Brazilian caipirinha (probably butchered that). Delicious. And thanks to the Willy St. construction, that little stretch of East Main is quite the parade of eastside weirdos in their various vehicles.

Caipirinha, indeed, jjoyce. You're a natural Brazilian. (Have those two words ever been strung together?)

Old Sugar was packed--PACKED--on the last Friday before their Groupon expired. Their extremely limited hours are encouraging in that they're not overreaching, but maybe summer Saturdays wouldn't be the worst idea? Or just a couple more two-top bar tables? A coat rack? Something should be done to accommodate the fact that, limited hours be damned, they're a very popular spot.

And tasty--all the previous drink mentions are seconded/thirded/forwarded herein.

Like gargantua, I've been meaning to stop there for as long as they've been open. Finally stopped by today and tried the rum, neat. Very tasty!

I may have to make it a regular stop for grading papers after school.

If only I had more teachers like you. That damned sober grading likely put a cramp in some of my grades.

I stopped in last weekend, trying to figure out a way to include them in next year's Caft Beer Week. They can't serve alcohol they don't make, so real beer is out. We tried Pabst NA in some cocktails that were...<shudder>.

We then tried to make a Sazerac cocktail with Cane & Able rum, Ouzo and bitters instead of rye, absinthe, and bitters. By the sixth one Nathan had the recipe down pretty well. Tasteee! We ended up calling it "Main Street".

Thanks to Heavy Table for unearthing this happy news:

Despite the fiercely intense effort to craft new and better spirits that defines Old Sugar, Greenawalt’s ongoing sales of bottled liquor represent only a portion of his business. The distillery also functions as a bar and tasting room three days a week.

“We’re open Thursdays and Fridays 4-10pm,” says Greenawalt. “Soon we’ll be open on Saturdays as well, probably noon to 10.
