Euthanizing and editing

Postby sylvie » Thu Jun 23, 2011 11:20 pm

I can see nowhere in the recent Isthmus story that the Madison Parks Commission plans to euthanize those Canada Geese who frequent "our" beaches and parks. To "Euthanize" means to provide a peaceful, painless death without fear or suffering. Our estimable Parks Commission plans no such thing.

They plan to provide plenty of fear through their "round ups" and probably a lot of suffering also through whatever manner they intend to use to slaughter these highly intelligent creatures who mate for life.

I thought Isthmus was more attuned to correct English usage than to think the term "euthanize" means simply to kill an animal, no matter how brutally it is done.

And by the way, where are these geese supposed to go? We've already altered most of their former wetlands habitat into croplands for us humans and us alone. But then the impression remains that this planet was made primarily for homo sapiens, and if we have to drive all other species into extinction, well, that's too bad but that's that way it has to be.

I'd like that too but I'm guessing the tests will come back with too much heavy metals.

Would probably get rid of the geese, but you'd attract hippies. Might not be worth the tradeoff...

I volunteer to "euthanize" those over-grown rats with hot lead. Anyone try to run through Warner Park? Their crap is everywhere and they're mean.

Where do I sign up?

What happened to all that "I live in Minnesota" crap? That's a helluva drive to go splashing through goose droppings.

Ned recently scooped up a pied-à-terre in the Capital City. We are neighbors again. Let the dancing begin!

Oh, I thought maybe Blaska's sock puppet skills had deteriorated. Again.

For what it's worth, Russ Hefty's report does mention "humane removal," and that the euthanized geese can be given to food pantries.

I don't see any proof or a strong case that shit and water studies from years ago indicate recent beach closings are a direct result of geese, though. So this is kill 'em and see what happens because it's too expense to explore non-lethal methods.

The fact is, in sufficient numbers, and in the wrong locations, they are pests. The fact that they are cuter than things like mice, rats, or emerald ash borers does not mean that they are not pests.
