It can't be much worse than McDonald's.

If they can get the texture right, I'm all for it. And they'll probably be able to do it.

Why the hell not? We're not eating that stuff because we like the idea of torturing large animals for years, killing them in a painful and insensitive manner, and then processing their dead bodies in factories that are often less sanitary than we would like to believe.

I find it odd that the scientists in the article expect to have a hard time finding people to test the in vitro meat. I would try it without hesitation. Just advertise a free lunch, and people will show up. It wouldn't surprise me if, over time, these artificial meat products became more popular than real meat. If they can be made cheaper, better, and with greater consistency, why resist?

I ate at McDonald's today for lunch. It was clean, fast, cheap, and the staff was diverse. The food was fine.

I vaguely remember reading some story by Arthur C. Clarke in which a future society only eats meat synthesized in the lab. Different companies experiment with different flavors, textures, etc.

Then one company produces a new variety that seems to be wildly popular. And it turns out to be based on synthetic enzymes that mimic the flavor of human flesh....

I know I shouldn't be surprised at how easily the peenie misses the entire point no matter how large the target is, but I always am.

I think this is a tremendous thing - lots of people are in to eating some truly flavorless burgers, so if we can grow 'em in a test tube, why not?

That being said, even science has limitations - we need to make sure they never try to grow a taco. Man can fly high, but tacos come from ON high and science has NO place in our one, truly perfect food.

Why does this remind me of when I pry open my dog's mouth to fish out some disgusting thing off the ground he's trying to swallow?

Ah yes, "food product". The Dutch will develop it and the Chinese will figure out how to copy it using gelatin and some by-product from the manufacturing process for lawn furniture.

We deserve it. We of the conceit that no matter how many human units we cram into this place, science can feed them. Or god. Hence the current crop of plum-sized grapes, apple-sized plums, grapefruit-sized apples, John Holmes-sized bananas, etc....

The more I know, the less I eat.
