Braves win vs. Pirates (?) terrible call

Postby Endo Rockstar » Wed Jul 27, 2011 9:31 am

here's the video. after 19 innings it came down to a lazy slide and a lazy tag, but jesus, I think the Ump was a little tired.

That was just a brutal, brutal call. I don't know how you miss that -- the throw beat the runner to the plate, the catcher clearly applied the tag, and the runner never even made it to the dish. Officiating in all sports seems to be going downhill.

Brutal doesn't even cover it...but, its baseball.

There some talk that the catcher blocking the baseline as the reason for the call, but that looks like bullshit too.

MLB Official Baseball Rules "7.06", and "Rule 2.00 (Obstruction)."

7.06 says: The catcher, without the ball in his possession, has no right to block the pathway of the runner attempting to score. The base line belongs to the runner and the catcher should be there only when he is fielding a ball or when he already has the ball in his hand.

and

Rule 2.00 (Obstruction): If a fielder is about to receive a thrown ball and if the ball is in flight directly toward and near enough to the fielder so he must occupy his position to receive the ball he may be considered “in the act of fielding a ball.” It is entirely up to the judgment of the umpire as to whether a fielder is in the act of fielding a ball.

I don't know, not the most convincing tag I've ever seen. I think he probably did graze the mitt across his thigh, but I can also see how the ump could have missed it. McKenry should have knocked the runner onto his ass.

Yeah, when they kept showing the replay, I was thinking "shouldn't the glove have been deflected somehow?" Obviously, if he only brushed the uniform, it would not have - but who knows.

Well the MLB has come out saying that they blew it, so I guess they blew it.

And from an ESPN article:
Later Wednesday, Meals said he saw in his review of the play that Lugo's pants moved slightly when tagged. Meals said that showed him he missed the call.
