Support DECENT Mexican food in Madison

Where are you eating and what do you think? What's opening, closing, succeeding, failing?

Fight your own fights, boy.

Is keeping score ok?

Mexican food does not have to be cheap to be authentic.

I like to think I have a little skin in the Madison food conversation. What color skin that is, is likely of more concern to you than me.

For what it was...

With rent downtown, I wonder where the price points for the new place will settle.

A vast majority of the Mexican places in Madison are either cheap and mediocre or expensive and mediocre. La Mestiza downtown was better and similarly priced than Laz Cazuelas, and certainly better than utterly horrific piles of feces like Frida's. It had a few items that were quite good. It was certainly uneven in quality but at least the chips and salsa were both free and very good - bucking the recent trend here to charge for both.

All of the other places pimped on TDPF have been disappointing to me thus far. I've basically given up trusting the taste of this forum when it comes to Mexican food because people seem to have orgasmic reactions to food I find no better than what I can cook just by following a 30 minute recipe at home.

I also don't get the reverse-snobbery that declares that Mexican food must be cheap and simple; restaurants in Mexico run the gamut of price, style, and sophistication, yet seemingly all people want here is equivalent to the road-side cart experience; they disdain anything else.

I had one really great meal at Cilantro that gave me hope we might start having quality Mexican here as can be found in Chicago and Milwaukee; but then the next two meals were quite bad there.

I'll probably try Fancisco's since it's really close to my work and the OP doesn't claim it is anything beyond "DECENT."

Not to pick on anyone in particular, but the issue that was raised (and subsequently ignored) in the Nostrano thread is rampant in this one.

Frida (Frida Mexican Grill)
Cilantro (Cilantro Bar and Grill)
Laredo's (Laredo's Mexican Restaurante)

I think Mr. Johnson is referring to the incorrect use (or non-use) of the 's, not the absence of the chattery extra words in a restaurant's full name.

I'm proud of myself for not saying anything about it in this thread yet; I've been treating my problem with therapy and drug's.

What BoPo said. I have no problem with the shorthand. It's the singular/plural/possessive errors that bug me. I only added the full names for context. Led Zeppelin's, Flander's, and Nuges would be equally problematic.

Ha, I have a friend who always says "Sardines" and I have to remind him that it's only one sardine, and it has no possessions.

Yes, though, a very dull discussion.

I agree with the prevailing sentiment regarding Francisco's: decent, inexpensive food. I also worry that they're not seeing enough business so far, and at those price points will find it hard to pay the rent.

Related note, Las Cazuelas is gone. As it should be, as far as I am concerned.

Other opinions I have on Mexican food in Madison:
Antojitos El Toril is BLAND.
Pan y Pan (in the Woodman's parking lot) is good and very affordable.
Burrito Drive loves the garlic. Occasionally, even a little more then me. And their chicken wings are actual wings, not just wing parts.
Burrito Loco is awesome. Crazy awesome, I might add.

Have eaten at Francisco's 3-4 times since it opened. I am guessing that their m.o. for staying cash flow positive in a downtown location is that the staff overhead is extremely lean- every time I've been there Francisco himself has been waiting on all tables, with one person cooking in the kitchen. I have only once seen someone else working back in the open kitchen- looked to be a dishwasher, but not sure. The food's priced well and pretty tasty. Their pulled chicken, in particular, is tender and flavorful. I've also had a couple of fantastic tamales.

In my book, Taqueria Guadalajara is the best Mexican place in Madison for tacos.

I didn't know that Frida was Frida and not Frida's; thanks for the clarification. That one isn't obvious since it is followed by words that make me infer that it should be possessive. Normally I notice such things. I guess their food is so bad that my brain was no longer able to properly process the English language after ingesting it. Or, at least, no longer to process it at the barely passable level it normally does.
