Klimate Kooks Korrekt

If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

well, that was fun.
The polar bear scientist who has spent more than a month suspended from his government job has now been told that he should report back to work on Friday — although NPR has learned that his job is changing and he will no longer manage federal contracts.

http://www.npr.org/2011/08/25/139953618 ... rk?ps=cprs

After a month of 'investigation' that turned up nothing, he can't go back to his old job. Plus, he still has this hanging over his head:
"The return of an employee to work does not suggest that future administrative actions cannot/will not be taken," Schwartz added.
Huh? sounds like a political attack against someone who raised 'inconvenient' issues.

And now the investigators are being investigated!
Monnett was defended in this investigation by 'PEER', who released this press release
The leave was ordered by BOEM Director Michael Bromwich who reversed himself after the agency was informed that its top officials, including Bromwich, are now under investigation by Interior’s Scientific Integrity Officer for breaking new departmental scientific integrity rules designed to protect researchers from political interference as alleged in a PEER complaint filed on Dr. Monnett’s behalf.

You mean the dream that we can burn unlimited amounts of fossil fuel without consequences? Nice of you to catch up with reality.

Is your computer running, are your lights and air conditioning on? Have you driven or taken the bus today? Have you used anything plastic?

You're complicit doofus.

Correct.
But unlike you, I'm not in denial. I don't write off global warming as a 'scam'.

And I'm not standing in the way of changes required to adapt to reality. I didn't kill the rail line between Madison and Milwaukee. And I didn't vote for the guy who did.

I'm also not pretending that drilling in the Everglades is some kind 'solution' to our energy problem.

"... I was still completely unprepared for the gob-smacking scale of the breakup, which rendered me speechless," Hubbard said in a statement. The scientist said no similar event has happened in Greenland since recorded observations began in 1876.

Scientists now worry that another block of ice--about two times the size of Manhattan--is preparing to break off, according to the New York Times.

My favorite bit...
...observers do not know whether the region's rising water and air temperatures contributed to the deterioration of the ice.

Scale is always hard to judge in the treeless landscape of Greenland, but in these pictures it is enormous: The cliff walls visible in the photograph are roughly 3,000 feet high, or about three times as high as the Eiffel Tower. The glacial channel at this point is about 10 miles wide.

Presidential candidate and Dominionist Rick Perry suggests that global warming deniers are like visionary scientists:
Rick Perry wrote:just because you have a group of scientists that have stood up and said here is the fact, Galileo got outvoted for a spell.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/b ... ge-sceptic

Which I guess makes the scientific establishment equivalent to the Catholic Church.

And in 500 years, the IPCC will belatedly apologize to all the deniers, right?

Hey, Rick, have you noticed that your state is on fire?

The BBC takes a look back at the work of John Tyndall

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-15093234
It was 150 years ago that John Tyndall, one of history's truly great physicists, published a scientific paper with the far-from-snappy title On the Absorption and Radiation of Heat by Gases and Vapours, and on the Physical Connexion of Radiation, Absorption, and Conduction.

What Tyndall had demonstrated for the first time was that gases in the atmosphere absorb heat to very different degrees; he had discovered the molecular basis of the greenhouse effect.
.....

It's salutary to put Tyndall's paper in a historical concept.

His discovery, description and analysis of the molecular basis of the greenhouse effect came more than 30 years before the discovery of either radioactivity or the electron.

How quaint. Fortunately we now know that "science" is just a bunch of "theories". Also, sunspots.

Tyndall was amazing. Before he conducted experiments (stimulated by his assignment to create better foghorns for British lighthouses) the very nature of sound was not settled science. He showed that sound is basically change in pressure in a given medium (air, water, etc.). It's hard to imagine that something that basic--not even as sophisticated mathematically as electromagnetism--was still something of a mystery in the mid-19th century, but it was.

The group's work also examined claims from "sceptical" bloggers that temperature data from weather stations did not show a true global warming trend.
...
"Our biggest surprise was that the new results agreed so closely with the warming values published previously by other teams in the US and the UK," said Prof Muller.

"This confirms that these studies were done carefully and that potential biases identified by climate change sceptics did not seriously affect their conclusions."

This article provides a good way to distinguish 'sceptics' from 'deniers'. Sceptics who are concerned with facts will come away either convinced that humans are influencing the climate, or may propose further tests before they are convinced. Deniers will immediately reject the conclusions out of hand as being 'biased'.

Joe Romm, quoting from NRDC’s Senior Scientist, Sylvia Fallon:
Much of the rest of the interrogation centered around whether Dr. Monnett and his colleagues had observed 3 or 4 dead bears. Seriously. This took about an entire hour of a two hour interrogation.

Not content with harrassing Dr. Monnett, they decided to pick on some of his colleagues.
Spent nearly a quarter of the two-hour Gleason interview discussing a misplaced routing slip on an internal agency poster regarding sea ice retreat that was ultimately approved by the agency. IG Agent Eric May, who claimed to have found the one-third page routing slip “in the trash” asked Dr. Gleason to take a polygraph test on whether he was trying to hide it.
...
The IG also confirmed that it had named Dr. Gleason in a criminal referral but repeatedly refused to say what the basis for a criminal accusation might be.
