Highlights of 2011 summer in Madison

What are the things that puzzle, enrage, delight and tickle you as you go about your life in Madison?

Highlights of 2011 summer in Madison

Working backwards:

- whiskey and backyard fire on Sunday, 9/4
- Lyrics Born at Orton, 8/27
- Multiple outdoor lunches from Southwest Trailer food cart on MLK
- Handful of Mallards games viewed (or not) from the stands, club deck and press box at the new Duck Pond.
- Jayhawks at Summerfest (technically doesn't qualify, but proximity and relevance of Summerfest makes it work)
- Cooler-cocktail-of-the-week served to my lawn chair at multiple Friday night youth baseball games
- Afro-Cuban band at Fete de Marquette

I need to dislodge some of June from my memory.

Yours?

+ a successful flower garden, enough water got that pretty Farmers Market lily to bloom, beautiful. The rabbits ignored the roses, nasturtiums and petunias.

+Rhythm and Booms was all right viewed from Union Terrace.

- bedbugs spoiled my summer, place is starting to look much better, I believe in prevention and being proactive, it was a learning experience.

+ love the new back of the building awning at Cargo Coffee, nice place to sit in the rain, or hot bright day.

+ Madison is beautiful especially in nice weather, Laborfest was perfect, saw old friends, Soglin and Pocan showed up, good music.

+ made sure to go out with a vivacious 82 year old friend.

The Flat Earth Ensemble @ the Waterfront Festival.

Olbrich Gardens - all summer, but especially when they still had the little turtles sunning themselves on the log that stuck out into the happy pond.

Mickey's open mike on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, and after the Harmony Tournament.

The Harmony Tournament, and taking a hit away from Tony Castaneda.

The Taming of the Shrew and The Tempest at APT.

The jukebox at The Ideal. I have a whole new appreciation for "Mother and Child Reunion."

The downy woodpecker at my feeder just now. Dude - it's been real.

--Hardly using my car at all -- most of my transit this summer has been bike. The bike paths are the best thing this city ever built, and every trip is a whole new experience if you have your eyes open.

--My 3-year-old prairie garden is assembling an amazing collection of bird and bug visitors. Happiest moments of the summer were spent out there watching stuff and digging-and-filling.

--Learning more about chickens, which are totally appealing creatures.

I'll have to go look for those turtles.

I guess in my value system, enjoying nature is at the top.

* Saw my tomatoes top out at 8 feet, seemingly eager for more height on a trellis that couldn't keep up.

* New Little Free Librairies springing up about the 'hood.

* Watched the halting, uncertain flegding of the new baristos/baristas of August.
(What is charming in August is agggggravating in November.)

* Regularly watched cacophonous crows laying down the spank on visiting hawks. (These crows are vociferous and remarkably clear. We need them on the square next go-round. Crows have excellent powers of recognition, they say.)

We could train them to recognize and dive bomb certain Republican elected officials as they enter and leave the Capitol.
