Painted Road Lines

With all of the re-paving and painting of road lines going on. Why doesn't Madison use a paint that can be seen when it's raining.

Wait, do I know you? My mate has been saying this for years. Every. Time. It. Rains. (Yes, it drives me a little batty.)

I expect it's for the same reason they only make crosswalks identifiable with zebra stripes for a small number of crosswalks. It's a shortcut.

I agree about some of the stripes not being sufficiently visible.

On Willy St I noticed they were putting down the deluxe ones, which have a layer of reflective ground glass dust (so I am told) to make them show up at night. I don't know how well that works in the rain but right now they're brand new, so the next rainy night we'll find out.

AFAIK the reflective paint works thanks to a mismatch between the refractive index of air, and of little glass beads adhered to the paint. Water spoils that mismatch.

It's definitely an issue.

If I could think of a better way, I'd be rich.

It seems plenty of other cities, towns, and villages have figured it out, just not us.
