Somebody stole a tree from University Ave Christmas lights.

What are the things that puzzle, enrage, delight and tickle you as you go about your life in Madison?

Somebody stole a tree from University Ave Christmas lights.

Those sonsabitches.
We drove past it last weekend. At least I got to see it before somebody put a big hole in it. We're a little tapped with Christmas and recall donations right now but I'll send them something after the holidays.

The row of arborvitaes with different colored lights on University Avenue is one of my favorite Madison Community Holiday traditions. I know a lot of people love watching the lights. I've noticed many people commuting to and from work via Madison Metro, like myself, appreciate them this time of year. There's even a U.S. Flag with a tiny spotlight in the center in back. No idea what would have motivated someone to cut one of the trees down, other than extreme stupidity and/or booze. Scrooge won't win though and a replacement tree will fill it's place in the summer. Hope they catch the jerk who did this. They'll probably be stupid enough to pose with it for a photo on their Facebook page. Maybe one of the more reputable landscaping firms like Bruce Company or Johannsen's would be willing to give them a price break? Heck, after the Holidays I'll put a few bucks aside myself for the new tree.

I hope whoever did it has nightmares. Fit punishment would be community service.

Initially an audacious and amusing crime, but then sadness for the fallen soldier turned dumb stump and missing tooth.

Before I gave it any more water, I asked our severed pinus strobus if it knew anything. If it knows anything, it ain't talkin'. The word on Uni is that the victim owed sap all over town. A law flunkee told me trees are known for being uncooperative witnesses. Who's the Shorewood equivalent of Colombo?

How much are those trees anyways?

I don't know how much the trees are but I do know that somebody's got to dig out that stump without hurting the trees next to it, then haul in the new tree, and then do all that gardener landscaper tree nursery stuff to make sure it lives through the transplanting. It's gonna be a little more than your basic Menards shrubbery.

Maybe they're new to Madison and thought it was some kind of cut-your-own predecorated Christmas tree farm.

Maybe, tired of the daily grind of standing up straight and representing Christmas cheer, it escaped. Word on the street is a mens 44 tall sheepskin jacket was missing from Smokey's cloakroom, a broken string of holiday lights left in it's place.

The man responsible for the trees and light display, Dr Jack Kammer, died last year.

I look at the missing tree as a memorial to him. The riderless horse if you will...

Ch15 just had a story about Bruce Co. putting in a new tree! From the film it looks like we may not be able to tell the difference.

Yes indeed, Bruce Company came to the rescue! They have already replanted the tree, due to our extremely mild December weather (for Wisconsin that is), and by spring it will have taken a good healthy root.

Thank you Bruce Company. That was a really nice and wonderful thing to do!! :D Hope you and all your employees have a great Holiday Season and Happy New Year!

I'll make sure to purchase my Spring herbs and whatever else I care to grow on my little balcony from YOU.

On the news piece they showed a machine digging and planting the tree. I thought I'd pay careful attention to see if I could tell the difference. Tonight as I rode by I could not say for certain that I could pick which green lighted tree is the new one.

Huh. I bet that freshly planted tree will pull out real easy.

I think it was third from left, eh?
