Running Up Behind the Wheel

If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

Don't most local physicians work for HMOs? The design doesn't seem to be working.

It was definitely not working. My mother had Tricare, which is a program for retired military and their families. (My father was a WWII vet.) She had Dean as her provider. The Dean Machine fell down on the job a number of times, and trying to reach her doctor of record was about like trying to phone the pope.

I don't have a solution to our country's medical woes, but I have plenty of ideas as to what the problems are. One is overreliance on writing prescriptions to solve all problems and minimize the time spent by the doctors and other personnel. What Ma needed wasn't available until she got admitted to hospice: someone to review and knowledgeably oversee the whole thing, and more than that, to listen to our wishes and preferences and respect them.

But that would take more than fifteen minutes and an occasional phone call returned by an underling, so it's not available.

The problem clearly isn't limited to the younger set.
59 year old Martha L. Burnidge of Lodi WI was cited for OWI, recklessly endangering safety, failure to stop at a stop sign, wrong way on a highway, and is pending charges for heroin possession.

Something interesting today from the NY Times:

"In 2008, for the first time in nearly 30 years, more people died of poisoning than in car crashes. Poisoning is now the leading cause of injury death, and 90 percent of poisonings were caused by drugs...The rate was highest among 45- to 54-year-olds, and people under 24 had the lowest rates of any group except those over age 65"

Sounds unbelievable but it's not just more drugs..."Equipment improvements and law enforcement have combined to sharply reduce the rate of car crash deaths since 1980."

Did they count a crash due to running up behind the wheel as poisoning, or auto-related?

I wish the Richland Centers of the world would get their own smack dealers, so those folk wouldn't have to come here and create roadway hazards passing out with their foot on the gas pedal.

Anyone ever wonder what causes all this heroin addiction?

The DEA is certainly not helping matters:

To those unaware, oxycodone is basically synthetic heroin.

I had oxycodone (percacet) for 4 days after a broken limb a few years back.

I don't get it.

Maybe I needed to shoot it or something?

I didn't even find it that wonderful for pain relief, let alone any kind of great "high".

Was it using smack or the cellphone that led to this?

The cellphone defenders will say it was the smack, and the smack defenders will say it was the phone.

Gotta give the lady credit for only hitting inanimate objects.
