Wikipedia Going Dark This Wednesday To Protest SOPA

Postby Remember_Me » Mon Jan 16, 2012 4:38 pm

This should be interesting.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has announced that the "encyclopedia anyone can edit" will go dark this Wednesday in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act, aka SOPA, that's dividing Washington DC – not to mention pitting online content providers against ISPs, search-engine sites, civil libertarians, and others.

Wales tweeted on Monday that the English-language version of Wikipedia would go down at midnight this Wednesday, Eastern standard time (5am in the UK), and come back up in 24 hours.

Breaking: SOPA is dead:
In a surprise move today, Representative Eric Cantor(R-VA) announced that he will stop all action on SOPA, effectively killing the bill.

Obama came out against it - but that didn't mean much, given that he's backed out on other veto threats.

I think the hurt put on GoDaddy was much more significant:

SOPA could be dead but it isn't really certain.

PIPA is still alive and kickin.

AFL-CIO is for SOPA. Wikipedia hates unions.

Actually, it is a *little* ironic to hear a person rant about how corporations need to be regulated more stringently, and in the next breath (well, maybe after the next beer) talk about how vibrant *online* corporations will fall apart if this bit of regulation is passed. But only a little.

Life isn't black and white. SOPA opposition / support has made for some strange bedfellows.

As used to be the case, and should be more often. Currently there seems to be lots of "I can't support that, because they support that".

SOPA would allow the government to censor individuals at the request of corporations. Opposition to SOPA is entirely consistent with opposition to coporate power over individuals.

I wonder what percentage of the online population knows about Google Cache - 20% or less maybe? Effectively, the Wikipedia blackout means a couple more clicks, and day old information.

Or, just do a Wikipedia search from any page other than Wikipedia, wait until the blackout page loads, then hit reload, and before the real page gets blacked out again, hit Stop.

Crap. Did I just ruin the Internet?
