Chadima's hand

Chadima suspected the victim to be gay, thus justifying his own drunken molestation of the student. Then threatening to fire the victim after he protested the grope.

Well there it is.

Pre-Penn State scandal this may have been swept under the rug.

Not anymore. Good.

The issue has less to do with Penn State (an entirely different sort of wrongdoing and a completely different level of crime) than with the UW's policies toward drinking to excess, which were identified as hypocritical long ago. Chadima isn't just some guy at the athletic department. He was one of the two or three most influential people on Alvarez's staff, in charge of the Camp Randall renovation. Imagine the implication at your own workplace if your supervisor is getting incoherent and handsy at an office gathering. That's the kind of thing you'd expect at a college newspaper holiday party (speaking from experience), not within one of the five highest profile workplaces in the state.

As with the Brian Solomon case, I'm amazed that getting hammered in an official setting is more or less sanctioned by the university, which makes situations like this one practically inevitable and invites expensive law suits.

Apparently, getting so drunk as to lose one's judgment is not out of place in Madison's corridors of power. It's one thing to get stinky at a bar on your own time and do something regrettable. That's your own problem and, while embarrassing, at least only reflects on you, personally. But when we see it happening with some frequency in official settings, with workplace power as a factor, it starts to demand that the community for which these trustees of the public work step in and make some changes.

Does this mean that Isthmus will be hosting a "No Beer - Just Cheese" festival next year?

Drinking is a huge issue here. I think we can all agree on that.

The other part is homophobia in mens' sports. While in other employment we're more or less over it (nobody much cares if lawmakers or college professors or even women athletes are homosexual) the men haven't made this transition. If Chadima is gay, and if he were out, this whole scene would have been much less likely. It's the sneaking-around factor and the shame factor that's driving creepy drunken behavior like this.

As long as homophobia rules, we'll surely see more of these cases just because an environment where lots of fit young men are gathered is an obvious draw. We need to be able to talk about this and we need role models of responsible, talented gay athletes and staff to show the way.

Which might not be any time soon.

Of course this exists, but in this specific case, wouldn't the outcome have been basically the same if the student had been female?

Well ok, maybe it wouldn't have made national news.

OK, I know it's none of my business, but I gotta ask. Were you the groper or the gropee? Or maybe just a silent observer.

I would expect not, since one thing has nothing to do with the other. To point out just two significant differences: 1) the festival is not an official government function, nor is it sponsored by the governmental entity, and 2) those under 21 are not admitted to the event.

Very weak attempt at equivalence, Mr. Butter.

That is quite an accusation. In defaming the University of Wisconsin this way, what exactly is your evidence? Is any of it non-circumstantial?

Oh, Larry....

The report said Chadima hosted a bowl game party for staff and student employees for at least the past four years.

Athletic Director Barry Alvarez and Sean Frazier, deputy athletic director, were aware of the party but did not attend.

"We believe there is reason to question the appropriateness of the sort of unregulated service of alcohol to students as well as the practice of a professional staff member drinking with students at university events," the panel wrote.

And, for the record, you forgot something:

To see the difference between male and female victims, review the media lack-of coverage when Barry got a cheerleader pregnant. When it was this hush-hush for so long, it HAD to be a male student. Nothing else would have been so unusual and so frightening to so many men in the Athletic Department.

You could tell by watching Vince's face when he was talking to the media.

Maybe now the Athletic Department will finally be held to the same rules as the rest of the University when it comes to alcohol and undergrads. That would be a refreshing change......

It is the opinion of the authors of the report issued by the University:

“With the alcohol purchased by the Athletic Department and served in a university official’s hotel suite, we believe that Chadima’s parties were, in effect, university events.

Okay. Thanks. Is the UW guilty of a tort then, in your opinion?

I don't really care about torts, Meade. As a UW alum, I care that the athletic department's antics -- complete with well-stocked bars -- reflect badly on the image of the university.
