Gorillaz
"Sweepstakes"
Plastic Beach

I like the new album just fine, as a whole, but the song "Sweepstakes" is really resonating with me. I don't think another Gorillaz song has hit the sweet spot of the unique Venn diagram of influences that is a Gorillaz song since "Clint Eastwood". Love the Mos Def, love the lyrics, love the beat, love the brass band.

You're a winner.

The new Yeasayer is amazing, playing in Madison at the end of April.

This record is the shit! Very unique... very, very trippy...

Zola Jesus + Not Not Fun = cool

Reverb drenched female chants, haunting vocal effects, grimey dub beats, drones, psydelic sound effects, distorted bass drops... Its all there.

"Who is there?"

A smoking compilation of EP/outtake/live radio tracks from the Midwest Beat I just burned for a friend.

PS: Thanks Logan!

I've been pretty heavy on Big Bill Broonzy.

Also enjoying this one from Phoenix:

For whatever reason the weird stylings of Ornette Coleman are getting lots of play:

And cranking lots of Replacements in anticipation of the upcoming documentary, COLOR ME OBSESSED.

Been listening to a lot of old Guided by Voices. I'm inspired by the incredibly primitive production, great songs, and the fact that those two can still happily coexist.

Also, in no particular order, obsessing on
Johnny Nash
Heart
King Tubby
Mark Ronson
Chic

I've had El Camino by the Black Keys on continuous play in my car for over the last month. One of these days I'll put in a different CD, but not yet.

Much to my shame I listened to "highlights" of a Ted Nugent CD today. Great White Buffalo, Stranglehold, Dog Eat Dog, Cat Scratch Fever, Wang Dang Sweet Poontang, etc. If Papa's Will or Mr. Jones' Hanging Party had been on the CD I would have listened to them, too. That'll take care of my Nuge habit for at least a year. Maybe I'll give the CD to one of the kids in the meantime and save myself further embarrassment.

Back to Lee Perry on the way home. Give Me Power or From My Secret Laboratory. Stick with the masters.

There's no shame in classic Nuge. Just please tell me you didn't give him any money on his trip through the Overture last year.

I was able to resist the urge to hear the Motorcity Madman this time around.

Anybody remember the poster of Ted circa 1969-1970? With his long wavy hair and insouciant smile it presaged the famous Farrah poster that came along a few years later. Mrs Scratch had it on her dorm room wall.

I'm sorry, but even when I was in a high school garage band and "Cat Scratch Fever" was actually popular neither I nor any of my friends could stomach Nugent. Even back then (xx-mumble years ago) it was clear the man was a talentless boob with the brain of a twelve-year-old destined to be arrested for throwing cats off the roof of the middle school.
