The Smiths. I liked 'em when their first album came out, then decided they were lame. But all that was a long time ago. I've always been a fan of Johnny Marr.

Now revisiting The Smiths on a Friday afternoon. They are worth revisiting. Morrissey, the singer, has a talent for melody and phrasing. Decent lyricist, very emotional.

Johnny Marr, the guitarist, is one of the most innovative guitarists of the 80s and did great things with tone and layering.

Listen to the first five seconds carefully to get a feel for Marr. I think this was their first single, and it's a good intro.

They were also really very strange at times. This song is really a masterpiece of guitar work, and showcases Morrissey's distinctive cadence. I have never understood what it's about, other than a general sense of being the "other," which is what a lot of their stuff is about.

The Smiths - Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others

"Bigger" is also a good place to start with the Smiths.

What do you think -- enduring, or musical footnote?

When I was in high school I listened to The Smiths pretty much non-stop, along with the usual suspects of 80's alt-rock (The Cure before they sucked, U2 before they sucked, REM before they sucked, etc before they sucked). The Smiths quit before they sucked. Even "Strangeways Here We Come," an entire album that's essentially The Smiths flipping the bird at the record industry, is pretty good. If I'm not mistaken, Rolling Stone's greatest albums of all time list included every single Smiths album. I didn't check, but I doubt even The Beatles matched that mark (though they had more than five albums).

Here's something you might not have noticed about The Smiths. Morrissey rarely rhymes anything and when he does, it's an unconventional rhyme scheme. Like he might use assonance, alliteration or rhyming within a line, but it's never an aabb or abab kind of thing. I always found that fascinating for a lyricist.

I'm still holding out hope that they do a reunion tour even as Johnny Marr is busy with Modest Mouse and Morrissey is busy offending carnivores (like me!) I really don't care what those tickets cost, nor how far I have to travel. I'm there, dude.

Street Sweepers Social Club. Incidentally, Tom Morello is on the front cover of Musician's Friend this month. My hundredth monkey mind tends to work that way.

The newest Lambchop album Mr. M has been knocking the paste outta me lately. Stunning string arrangements, woodwinds, knocking bass thumps, beautifully delicate production; all provide a warm bed for the cryptically hushed crooning of a man who sounds a bit like a drunk/drugged-out Cat Stevens. Picture Sam Beam on a deserted island listening to too much The Soft Bulletin. I never gave this Lambchop dude a chance before and now the joke's on me.

Byran Lee's Greatest Hits.

Lee, originally from Wisconsin, is a blues guitar player. Used to see him play in Madison during the mid 70s. Moved to New Orleans years ago. Taught Kenny Wayne Shepherd his licks.

The Ramblers International. Their highlife version of "Grazin' in the Grass" is perfect for a surprisingly warm March afternoon.

Naniwa Express--from Japan's funkytown, Osaka. Great jazz-funk cover of "Whole Lotta Love."
