What's wrong with the GOP, anyway?

Races for the Senate, U.S. House, etc. and other issues of national importance.

Ooh. You walked into that one. And you need a comma after "Link."

Today I am channeling my inner Gertrude Stein who argues in her lecture "The Making of The Making of Americans" that the purpose of the comma the comma has no purpose but if the comma has a purpose the purpose of the comma is to tell you when to breathe the purpose of the comma is to tell you when to breathe and you all know when to breathe without me telling you when to breathe don't you.

Shoot yourself. (Link please all or link please some.) There's no need to feel put upon. Just say what you mean. And to channel Gertrude, it would be "link" [breath] "please."

(But this was really (really) the lesser point, to begin with. A throw-away point, even.) We all drop commas, especially when we text on the Metro with our noses.

I did say what I meant, in both cases. But apparently you only understood the first comment, since the point of Stein's text is that the reader should pause for themselves--inserting a directive to breath would be completely against her spirit.

Your trial sentences are conjugated incorrectly, anyway. Link pleases all or Links please some please all, while your examples please none.

Thanks for the links, Meade, but:

1. They belong in another thread--the link I asked for in this thread was your assertion that (paraphrasing here...) African-Americans have been fleeing the Democratic party because what we now call blatant covert racism.

2. Your first link concerns layoff notices, not firings. Layoff notices can and often are issued for legal reasons (CYA for HR), and can be rescinded once the cause of the CYA maneuver has been dealt with.

3. Your second link, from last September, has to do with negotiations between Albany and the state employees unions. What does that have to do with your assertions on the other thread?

4. Your third link is about whether government downsizing disproportionately affects African-Americans (as apparently the NYT claimed) or whites (as apparently the Washington Examiner claims). Again, what does this have to do with anything?

5. Your fourth link, from CNN more than a year ago, is about projected layoffs among state workers in various places. That's nice, but projected layoffs are not firings. Surely some further news has developed in the past year....

6. Which brings us to your last link, the only one with any real data in it, and up-to-date as well, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This concerns "mass layoff events" in the private sector--correct me if I'm wrong, but your assertions were about the public sector--and only mention Wisconsin once: indicating that Wisconsin had the fifth-highest number of initial unemployment insurance claims in 2011. This is not particularly good news, given that we are not the fifth-largest state in the Union, but since you were making assertions about public-sector job losses, I guess that's immaterial.

In sum: five links to several varieties of the wrong kind of data, posted in the wrong thread. Back to you.

Link please. Preferably one supporting your assertion.

Detritus, thanks very much for the laughs tonight! As well as sifting through all of Meade's misplaced links. (Again Meade, pay attention, now you are not even in the right thread!)

Detritus, I thought I would re-post your original request to Meade for links because I think he has a hard time moving from one page to the next and remembering what he is supposed to be answering. Because I really got to see this one! If such a link actually exists,
I doubt it.

And Meade, what's up with the four separate posts for four links?
You know you can put them all in one post right? Or are you trying to bump up your total number of posts? It's about quality, not quantity. Both in the number of your posts, and the links you post! One is an opinion column, and one is a blog. Boo. Not quality sources for facts!

Blacks have not left the party so much as the party has left them. Despite issues like Black mass incarceration or levels of Black unemployment not seen since the Great Depression, they remain beneath the notice of the nation's first Black president. In year four of Obama, Black America is irrelevent, voiceless, powerless, and paralyzed.

I agree with you there--the Democratic party has thrown most of its supporters under the bus (I believe that's the appropriate metaphor here...), a long-term practice that goes back to the rise of the Blue Dogs. It feels like this movement has intensified in the current administration, but that may be due more to the misplaced expectations people had for Obama than anything else. He's a focal point for what is politely called "disappointment," but he's hardly the only Democrat who belongs in the Neoliberal Hall of Fame.

Here's a writer (in that left wing rag the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, yet) who thinks it's time to get rid of political parties altogether.

Ironically, the Journal really was a Socialist newspaper, back when it published in German under the name Deutsche Arbeiter Zeitung....

Really? When was "back when"? Was that before the National Socialists in Germany gave socialism a bad name or after the Soviet Socialists in the Soviet Union gave socialism a bad name?
