Horrific email signatures: Go!

Postby jjoyce » Tue Mar 27, 2012 3:02 pm

I've worked in IT since '95, so I've seen some doozies. I got one today that I shouldn't share, so I won't. But I have to think there are some good examples out there.

Are there?

There's a couple on my neighborhood email list that I'd love to share, but like Jason I cannot.

Email (and online forums like this one) have made it all too easy to throw conventional letter formats out the window.

I shudder when I see some of these, especially since the RFC states that an email sig should, at a maximum, be (including the dashes to separate from the message body):

--
first line of text
second line of text
third line of text

I worked with someone in their early fifties who was signing their name along with their graduation date. ie.

Jane Doe, MA '95

I chuckled everytime I saw it.

Many people in my organization sort of use these. They use what they think is an inspirational, motivational, and/or visionary quote by someone who is supposed to be historical, learned, and/or insightful after their names.

Ugh.

My sympathies. That practice is so...I dunno, pretentious.

I know someone that used to use "This space intentionally left blank".

Signatures that are multiple times longer than the message itself.
Signatures that contain phony legalese about "intended recipients" and "delete this if you ain't supposed to have it." That's meaningless.

I had a project manager with a client of mine that had the signature line "If everything is a priority, then nothing is a priority. -N. Collier" which was particularly ironic as she was always asking me to prioritize all her jobs.

I'm seriously considering adding this to my work sig:

"Don't like it? Eat a dick."
- Snoop Dogg

This is, increasingly, my philosophy on life.
