Self-driving cars

I'm curious about people's reaction to this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=cdgQpa1pUUE

Overall, I'm impressed. They credit the local police department at the end, so I assume it was all done under carefully controlled conditions. I also wonder how representative the video is of the car's actual performance -- is this the 1% best driving it does, or would a trip like this go as smoothly every time?

There's a lot of path dependence (pun not intended) in our transportation system. It seems like it would be hard to get from where we are now, to a case where most cars are driving themselves most of the time. I'm sure we could get there, but not sure what the route is.

That's totally cool for the guy in the video.

Self-driving cars could help a lot with drunk-driving problems, too.

We've already accepted a lot of automated control over the details of driving that, when I learned to drive 50 years ago, were handled manually by the driver. I think if we keep going in the same direction, we'll arrive at automated driving incrementally. We've already got sensors that make sure your path is clear, for instance when you back up.

Certain routes might be listed as "automated driver" routes before others, or delisted under special circumstances (construction, ice, etc).

Lenny: [Homer and Flanders are entering the football stadium parking lot. Not wanting to be seen with Flanders, Homer pushes him down in his seat, making it look like the car is driving itself] Hey look, Homer's got one of those robot cars
[seconds later, Flanders crashes]
Carl: One of those *American* robot cars

I think we need to get a few of these babies to surviving members of the Kennedy family.

They'll never take off because they don't drive 15mph over the posted limit in town.
