Right. Capitalism is going to end poverty. Just give it another 200 years! Thank you for your patience.

Twit.

If it wasn't for our socialized transportation, education, etc the capitalism would crumble.

This capitalism needs government/no it's the other way around debate is both tired and essentially unprovable. Here is a word: interdependent. Like the chicken and the egg, you need both.

As a city, we need to determine how much we can afford to provide in services to the homeless in the context of the rest of the city's needs. If the needs of the homeless exceed what the city can afford, what then? What I am hearing from the mayor is that those needs in excess of what the city can afford cannot be met by the city. I agree. That doesn't mean we don't care about the less fortunate, as some seem to imply.

Yes but without a rooster, eventually you'll run out of chickens and eggs. Then where will you be?

In all seriousness, last fall, Soglin, City Council, and others pimped these unfortunate homeless campers when they broke their own zoning ordinances and bent state health codes in order 1. to make a show of "caring" and 2. to pander to the politically-motivated "progressives" behind the so-called Occupy Wall Street movement.

Unfortunately, Madison voters elected the pompous preening rent-seeking clowns like Mark Clear, Brian Solomon, Satya Rhodes-Conway, Marsha Rummel, Bridget Maniaci, Shiva Bidar-Sielaff, and Lisa Subeck. And now their eggless homeless chickens have no place to roost.

I like that you call all these folks pompous, Meade. What does that make you - humble? (How about "full of shit"?)

Well, it definitely doesn't make him averse to name calling and nonsensical metaphor mixing.

"Eggless homeless chickens"? Yeesh!

I might be wrong, but I think Occupy Wall Street was in New York, where Wall Street is. This thing was called Occupy Madison.

Unrestrained capitalism ends up exactly like unrestrained communism- a handful of people have all the money and all the power and the majority of people fight with each other over the little that remains.

In capitalism, man exploits his fellow man. In communism the reverse is true.

I called the pompous preening rent-seeking clowns "clowns" so, yes, I am guilty of calling the pompous preening rent-seeking clowns what they are.

Think about it, Jason. The only metaphor used was chickens. If anything, for comic effect, I mixed two chicken idioms. Strap on your sense of humor and I think you'll see that it isn't as nonsensical as you first thought.

Yes, but if you go back and read carefully what I wrote, you'll notice I referred to the Occupy Wall Street movement. The Occupy Wall Street movement included many locations besides Zuccotti Park. Four of those locations were here in Madison where self-styled "Progressives" ended up exploiting the poor, the misfortunate, the homeless, the mentally ill, and the alcoholic and drug dependent by administratively herding them from one temporary makeshift homeless shelter camp to another in order to maintain a presence for their cynical "Progressive" anti-Walker-restore-collective-bargaining-for-public-unions political movement.

That is why they are all moving here! The mayor should not also allow them to trash our fair city like they have been doing for the past six months on East Washington. Way to go Mayor Soglin! You are not a loony liberal after all!

How about everyone that is anti abortion adopt a kid in foster care and everyone like detritus adopt a homeless person.

as Soglin pointed out the city spends millions on poverty and homelessness plus close to half the county budget goes toward social services. what makes you think that throwing more money at the problem is going to change it? how much more do you think is appropriate?

At one time there was no safety net and the poor and disadvantaged depended solely on private charity. Unfortunately that approach failed miserably.

How much government assistance is too little?

Poverty and homelessness are a byproduct of the human condition. If you don't want the local government spending money to help out the less fortunate, then vote for politicians who won't help the less fortunate. Just don't be surprised when the less fortunate congregate in public, or come to your neighborhood and go door to door asking for alms, or steal from you and your kids, etc. I don't believe that Madison draws the less fortunate because we take care of them better than other places- just go to "other places" and you'll find PLENTY of less fortunate folks. If anything, I think it's a sign of how compassionate Madisonians can be that we take care of our less fortunate better than those "other places."
