Is there a quality bread bakery in madison?

Grocery stores, recipes, cook books, CSAs, farmers' markets, organic, local, processed, corporate. It's a smorgabord!

Cress Springs is awesome. They're also at DCFM.

Anyone tried Naked Elm? They deliver to Madison if you get their CSA.

Baker's Window is pretty good too.

Ooo! Thanks for the NYT link - I hadn't seen that. And now I get the connection between Cress Spring and Naked Elm!

(also - *Spring in my previous comment. Oops.)

Ok, educate me. What is wrong with Classen's? I get a lot of choices, and not just "different colored and shaped" choices. I can taste a difference. Their sourdough is not my favorite, but their rye varieties are great, IMHO.

So, am I just a pathetic bread noob?

I think it might be a difference in what you want in a bread. I don't like rye bread. If that is Clasen's strength, that may be why they are not my favorite. I like chewy crust. I love the crusts at La Baguette and Batch Bakehouse. The Clasen baguette is serviceable but not memorable.

I'm from the Milwaukee area so I prefer potato pancakes. I wish more restaurants in Madison offered them with their fish fries.

Well, there's your problem - in most cases, feathers and buckets fall into the 'inedible' column.

Are you sure English is your primary language, Ned? Maybe the nuns taught you all wrong, just to fuck with you.

Batch Batch Batch! The quality of the bread there is amazing. It's the only thing I will serve at dinner parties anymore. The fougasse is wonderful too. Last weekend for a brunch party I brought back some amazing pistachio shortbread cookies, made cucumber sandwiches from their bagette loaves and some over the top raspberry almond cake. Mmmmmm.

I tried those for the first time last week. I don't think I have ever enjoyed a cookie that I bought that much in my whole life.

Batch could go national with their sausage, egg biscuit.
