Costs Of Raising Children Soars Over Past 10 Years

If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

Costs Of Raising Children Soars Over Past 10 Years

I suppose if you have a bunch of babies to later sell them as "stamina boosters" you could help offset the costs of the ones you keep.

But really, what are the real reasons people reproduce so damn much?? Like I said somewhere else, I can mainly think that religion, racism, and just sheer stupidity are the biggest culprits.

Having a kid or two I guess I get for those wanting a family, but what drives these people who just keep churnin' 'em out year after year?

Your little bundle of joy is going to require a wad of cash.

The cost of raising a child from birth to age 17 has surged 25 percent over the last 10 years, due largely to the rising cost of groceries and medical care, according to the Department of Agriculture, which tracks annual expenditures on children by families.

The government's most recent annual report reveals a middle-income family with a child born in 2010 can expect to spend roughly $227,000 for food, shelter and other expenses necessary to raise that child - $287,000 when you factor in projected inflation.

And, no, the bill does not include the cost of college or anything related to the pregnancy and delivery.

"If you sat down to tally up the total cost of having children, you'd never have them," says Timothy Knotts, a father of four and a certified financial planner with The Hogan-Knotts Financial Group in Red Bank N.J. "It's a very expensive adventure."

Talk about a life-changing event. That's a lot of vacations, clothing, and restaurant dinners you may no longer enjoy.

Yeah. My daughter and her husband refer to the day care costs for both kids as The Second Mortgage.

And what's really unfortunate, if they're both that young that they're still in daycare, they've yet to actually get really expensive.

Hopefully they're budgeting right otherwise their second mortgage will become a reality and they'll be joking about a third. Hope you got a surplus of cash stowed away there rabble.

I have a sibling who has 2 kids both under 5. She's hit me up for cash at least a half a dozen times since having them. Between them, her loans from her education at UWLAX, and a hubby who bolted after kid 2, I don't know how she's gonna manage. Hubby has degree also from UWLAX but seems to have no desire to use it... currently makes $12/hr at a factory. She's making about 40 a year now, but also has considerable daycare costs.

I don't know what the hell she's gonna do.

On the plus side, the kids are damn cute.

Which also seems to be the sole reasons why some people keep having them.

And what's worse, both of them say they'd leave the country if they could, for one where it's cheaper and safer to raise kids.

Funny, ain't it?

The data in the OP was up through 2010.

The new data is even worse.

Raising a child just got $8,000 more expensive.

Middle-income families with a child born in 2011 can expect to spend $235,000 over 17 years, according to a new report by the United States Department of Agriculture. That cost factors in food, shelter and other necessities to raise a child, and does not account for inflation.

It also marks a whopping $8,000 increase, or 3.5 percent rise, in just one year.

So why do babies born in 2011 cost so much more?

I used to buy people Congratulations cards when they announced they were with child.

Now I think I'll buy the Sorry For Your Loss cards from now on.

I notice they keep saying "to age 17". But not through age 17 (to 18).

Why wouldn't they count to age 18? It would also seem that year 17 to 18 would be one of the priciest. So why exclude it?

Am I missing something?
