New Pro-Walker Voter Suppression

Postby Stu Levitan » Tue Jun 05, 2012 12:59 am

Confirmed -- robo-calls going out, telling people that if they signed recall petition, it counts tomorrow and they don't need to vote.

Will our GOP and RW friends acknowledge this is despicable and should be prosecuted?

Stu,
That's a rhetorical question, right? Although let's just wait a wee bit for perro de maize to bite.

We already know that only the "democrat party machine" engages in fraud like this. What doesn't make sense to me is that the "democrat party machine" lives to engage in election fraud, but why don't they perpetrate it against the Republican Party?

So anyone who didn't sign the petition can stay home cause that counts as a vote for Walker, right? :P

Really the only people who need to go in to vote are those who didn't sign, but want Barrett or those who did but changed their minds?

Do these robocalls really trick anyone?

Reddit has its usual circle jerk going on this subject. This was a gem however:

I'm pretty sure treason means aiding a foreign enemy. This would be sedition.

Sedition. Sounds just as bad, but with just a hint of sexiness.

Despicable? Absolutely. Should it be prosecuted? I don't know. Is it a crime? If it is a crime (that is, it violated a statute), then yes of course it should be investigated and prosecuted.

Question for Stu Levian: Did you report this to law enforcement? Thanks.

Can you elaborate? Where is this confirmed? Did you receive this robo-call yourself?

Prank phone calls are illegal, aren't they? Anyone know?

Mr. Levitan, you are THE Madison historian.

You opened your post here with "confirmed". I'd say there is a hell of a lot of reputation behind that assertion.

Can your share with us the details of this confirmation? Thanks.

Wisconsin Statutes 12.05 False representations affecting elections. No person may knowingly make or publish, or cause to be made or published, a false representation pertaining to a candidate or referendum which is intended or tends to affect voting at an election.

https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/statutes/statutes/12

It's kind of the catch-all election fraud statute.

Thank you, peej.
False representations affecting elections. No person may knowingly make or publish, or cause to be made or published, a false representation pertaining to a candidate or referendum which is intended or tends to affect voting at an election.

I sure hope Stu Levitan's "confirmed" was not "false representation".

This is not confirmation that would satisfy Meade most likely, but before I saw this thread I saw a post from a friend on Facebook who did receive such a call and was quite angry about it.

Given the speed at which social media works, this little gambit could backfire. It motivated my friend to tell everyone she knows...who then pass it on to everyone THEY know.
