madison.com limits viewing

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it fits here

I installed a Chrome extension called On-Demand Cookie Cleaner, which makes it super easy to clear cookies for the domain you're visiting.

OK, but does it make any difference at madison.com?

In FireFox you just go to their site, right click on the page, View Page Info, Permissions, Set Cookies, Block.

I did that the first time I saw their goofy notice and haven't seen it since.

If you want clear your cookies so you can continue looking at articles, yes, it works.

OK, thanks. But are you clearing ALL cookies, or just for the site?

I don't want to lose all cookies, too annoying to lose useful info for sites.

My usual trick of "clear cookies for this domain" through IE does not seem to be working. Could they somehow be using a different domain to do the cookie insertion? Well, I'll figure something out.

I'm having a hard time imagining who exactly loves Madison.com so much that they'll pay the fee. The doofs who use their message board? Jason Joyce, just so he can fuel his Twitter feud with that one guy?

I'm curious about the madison.com app. It's one of the only good things they've done. Never glitchy and updated regularly. That's primarily where I read the news so I'm hoping they'll just keep that the way it is. Anyone know if they're messing with that?

That's the way I consume news from Madison.com and I haven't seen any change to it related to this paywall business. It's always worked far better than their full website. Only downside is it just seems to display news in the order it's published, not the order of importance.

It only clears the cookies for the site you're visiting.

well, as I said, clearing cookies just for site didn't work for me on IE browser, don't know why, it works at other paywall sites.

If I disable cookies entirely during visit to madison.com, that works.

That electronic board could fuel advertising for their electronic dead tree, but for a very long time that message board has been a personal haven of the admin and his handful of leftist friends.

So they are stuck with just themselves, alone, all alone, with no one but themselves. Now THAT'S truly sad.

From this past Thurday's paper and ink version of Isthmus (a free paper):
DOWN: Freeloading online news readers. The Wisconsin State Journal and The Capital Times institute a "paywall" for access to articles at the papers' shared website, Madison.com. The first 20 articles are free each month, but after that, users must pay $4.95 a month to read more. Print subscribers can get unlimited online access for $1.95 a month. State Journal editor John Smalley tells his paper: "As things have evolved in our business, it's become very clear tht getting subscription revenue for our digital content is really important."

Just one question. Does Isthmus consider its readers freeloaders?

MNI continues to amaze me with their (apparent) lack of any forethought. As noted by many others here, making your hard-copy subscribers pay for online access is ridiculous.

What's making my head spin is that they've put the free parts of their behind the paywall. The Cap Times (or what's left of it) and the Thur entertainment paper are both given away at no cost all over town.

I do understand the reason for paywalls, and am not opposed to an online subscription. But even with one, the paper should reflect the same accessibility online it does in print. Put the content that is free on paper in front of the paywall, and then put the rest behind it.
