Craft beer in a can

Postby Right Bower » Mon Jul 02, 2012 2:26 pm

Canned craft beer is THE thing this summer.

Question for anyone who wants to answer: do you drink it straight from the can, or pour it into a glass?

It's a mental thing I'm having a hard time overcoming. When I take a big swig of beer from a can, I expect Pabst or Leinenkugel's, not Sixpoint Bengali Tiger or Sierra Nevada Torpedo.

I tend to favor bottles at home and cans elsewhere (on the boat, at the game, etc).
Because my preference for cans is directly tied to the associated activities (and the ensuing aversion to glass), it's straight from the can for me.

At home I'll pour most beers, bottle or can, into a glass.

But on the boat, Torpedo out of a can is tough to beat. (Other than the torpedo/boat thing.)

If I'm at home, I pour it into a glass. I like to see the color of my beer and avoid sipping from a can top. If I'm outside (boating, tubing, camping, lawn gaming), I'll drink it straight from the can. Fortunately, the can market has been expanding, so I can get something other than Capital Amber (no disrespect meant at all) in a can. I have some Point Honey Blonde, Big Sky Scape Goat Pale Ale, Six Point Resin and Wild Onion Hopslayer cans ready for a day on the Wisconsin River tomorrow.

I always use a glass when I'm at home and straight from the can out on the water or at the tailgate. With the introduction of Sixpoint to the WI market I've been getting a lot more canned beer this year, but I've been a fan of Dave's BrewFarm Select and the Keweenaw beers for a while. And Capital US Pale and Wisconsin Amber are my go-to beers for tailgating at Miller Park or the golf course.

Straight from the can at home or on the road. There's something about drinking out of a can that I tend to like. Especially PBR tall boys. There's nothin' like drinking out of a 16 ounce can of beer.

I tend to pour bottled beer in a glass.

Cans are definitely making a comeback! In my fridge right now I have Sixpoint, Abita's Jockamo, Torpedo (which i think tastes lame in the can) and some Lil Yella Pils. Cans are easier to crush than bottle for sure;)

So you didn't notice any difference in taste between the cans and bottles of Torpedo? I did immediately. Much more astringent in the can...although it didn't send me to the can;)

My first Jockamo; A chocolate cake start and baloney sandwich finish. I don't like baloney and tolerate chocolate cake.

Unusually disruptive belches.
