It would appear that, for a fair number of forons, beer IS church.

There's a reason we call a bottle opener a "church key," after all.

Is there an equivalent for a can opener?

Nah.

There was once. Before the pop top, we had those pointy things you used to poke a triangular hole (two holes, actually) in the tops of the cans. It was properly carried on the same key ring as your car keys.

Yes, but it didn't have the same symbolism. I mean, a church key gave you access to the spirits, as it were.

A can opener just punched a hole in a small cargo container.

Then there was the more proper can opener which was a manual device used to cut along the perimeter of a can's top.Image

This is true. I had forgotten about that doohickey.

Yes, I remember the invention of the pull-tab--and then its reinvention as something you couldn't remove from the can itself.

I'm not totally sure why, but the mere existence of this wikipedia entry depresses me.

Beginning of the end of the pull tab was that episode of Emergency! where the guy choked on the one he put in his can.

I think Roy and Johnny saved the guy though.

You do not know how many times I have made that reference and received a blank stare. The best part of that scene was that the paramedics were responding to the chokers friend who got his arm stuck in a hole in the wall, all the while the choker was swilling beer and mocking his companion. The choker got choked as he guzzled his 4th of 5th can of beer that he dutifully dropped his pull tab into each time he cracked one. I still love that program, even after seeing it again on RTV.

As to the subject of the thread I will defer to Benjamin Franklin's thoughts on the subject.

Here's another interesting beer map from Floating Sheep:

The Beer Belly of America

Turns out that, in most of the country, grocery stores outnumber bars. But not in the Upper Midwest and High Plains....
