All that without a separate budget.

Not really.

I hope you're not startled to learn that a Library Studies program is distinct from a university's library system, which is typically thought of as a principal component of the institution's archival and research infrastructure. It supports all disciplines – within the university and beyond.

But it is interesting to note that UW's Library program is one which has emerged from obscurity to become a first-rate program. (Not that US News & World would know a good program from a hole in the ground ...)

Yes I know the graduate studies program in library systems is separate from the university's library system, but I assume there is a correlation between the two.

You think that UW's library and information system is ranked near the bottom. Got anything besides your sayso to back that up?

Like the correlation between the Business School and the UW HR department? Or the Law School and University's legal counsel? I'm sure the there are professional channels of communication and perhaps some shared initiatives ... Beyond that, nah. They're in independent orbits, with the library system being far closer to the infinitely demanding and rarely forgiving sun.

If you're up for digging in further, this might be a good place to start. (Keyword: ARL statistics): http://memorial.library.wisc.edu/services/index.html

Anyway, all of this is only one slice of the pie. It's too bad Biddy's clear assessment was tainted buy Scooter's self-serving stench. She had it right.

The UW-Madison is ranked #17 worldwide on the Shanghai Jiaotong list. That's the overall ranking. Different areas are ranked differently--the Ag School is ranked 11, the Med school 20, etc.

If you want to know what would have happened if Biddy and Walker had really tried their plan, I suggest you take a look at what happened recently at the University of Virginia.

It wasn't Walker's plan in any sense. It was so far beyond his scope that he merely nodded, dumbly. I doubt he could have even found the UW's admin building without the help of private bodyguards and their smartphones.

A more apt example might be the ousted president Lariviere, at the University of Oregon, who also tried to rescue a sinking ship from the clutches of self-serving legislators. No good deed goes unpunished ...

That would be a trick, even if the UW had an admin building.

Directions: From the capitol building, walk westward until your nose bleeds.

Because you walked into the wall at the bottom of Bascom Hill?
