"Chip Sealing" ??

What are the things that puzzle, enrage, delight and tickle you as you go about your life in Madison?

"Chip Sealing" ??

Postby fennel » Mon Jul 30, 2012 9:27 pm

All over the middle-west side the City is doing something labelled as "chip sealing." It looks like a kind of ultra-cheap pavement method that I've seen used in remote areas like upstate NY and northern Michigan.
Does anyone have details or background about this? I can't imagine it meets with current standards for urban applications.

It happens more often than you might think. I can't stand the technique, but it's not a new measure for Wisconsin, or Madison.

Roads and bridges - you didn't build that. Government does.

And in this case, the government is apparently doing a cheap short-lived half-assed job of resurfacing roads, likely because they've mismanaged revenue from taxpayers.

Did you read the link? They did this in my sister's neighborhood a few years back. It was crappy for a while, but now the roads are great.

In that case, I stand corrected. There are some excellent chip seals but they're not inexpensive. If it's great and long-lasting, it's probably from Koch Industries, Inc. - NovaChip®.

Yes, that would be Koch Industries as in the evil Koch Brothers.

Way to shit all over another thread, Looney Larry.

They did this on my street a few years ago as well. It sucks to drive on, bike on, and walk on for quite a while but it eventually gets smoothed out. It also does a number on the grass next to the road if you don't have a curb.

Damn. A business that produces a product or two that works, but STILL wants to control the government to the detriment of the common good, just so they can make a larger profit?

Who would have thought?
