DA's Office / Local prosecutors and sex crimes

Postby zeropoint » Sat Aug 04, 2012 8:01 am

Hi all--

I was very recently the victim of quite a violent sex crime for which there is plenty of evidence. I don't want to say too much here in public, but I'm happy to talk more openly over PM.

The detective assigned to my case informed me Thursday morning that they would not be pressing charges. I was sick--physically and mentally--when I heard this. The detective did get more information from me to take to the DA's office, but I'm not clinging to that sliver of hope.

Anyway, I know the DA's office is very understaffed right now and probably has to pick and choose more than they'd like. Nevertheless, I'm still finding myself looking for other options I have, including meeting with the DA myself and talking to him one-on-one.

What does anyone here know about the current DA's office and their habits when it comes to prosecuting sex crimes?

Also, I haven't ruled out a civil suit, though I don't know of any lawyers for that, so please PM me if you can recommend an attorney for a civil suit.

Hi, zeropoint --

I'm sorry to hear that you were victimized. When you say "current DA's office", do you mean Dane County?

Yes, sorry, should have made that clear.

That is aweful that this happened to you, and I commend your strength and courage to continue on and to even discuss this in a public setting.

I can add that this isn't just a problem with sex-crimes, as the current DA has a nasty record of slaps on the wrist and sentencing time served across all crime. I am sorry you are having so many issues, and hope that their offices come to their senses. I hate thinking that such a horrible person is still out on the street due to DA laziness. I just wish I knew what to tell you to make this specific instance better, but the issue as a whole needs to be adressed in this town.

Pretty bold accusations, munk.
What makes you think "DA laziness" is to blame?

Talking to MPD Officers who are fed up with arresting the same people over and over and over....

Don't you think there could be other factors at play, besides DA laziness?

Lack of prosecutorial resources?
Political pressure on DA's office?
Conscious decisions to not prosecute certain low-level crimes (possibly based on #1 above)?

The District Attorney yielding to partisan political pressure?

Yeah, right.

Forons sure are quick to make assumptions about the DA's office based upon some incredibly vague accusations by a new member.

No assumptions by me, just other realistic possibilities (besides "laziness")for not prosecuting certain individuals.

I was just trying to show my support for someone who clearly has had an aweful set of circumstances occur, and express that she isn't the only one having trouble with the DA office. Whether it is laziness or any other reason, it is an issue regardless.

Just to clarify one thing for the OP: if you're wondering why the PMs aren't flying in, it's because private messaging is disabled on TDPF.
