Oblique lyrics in pop

Postby Adam Powell » Fri Jul 20, 2012 9:54 am

A place to ruminate over puzzling lyrics.

First up to bat:

"I want you off the wall if you're playing the wall."
-- So What'cha Want

Baseball reference, or exhortation to replace the gloomy Pink Floyd double LP with the more upbeat Michael Jackson joint? (Both were released in 1979.)

Neither. He's Dr. Spock, and he's here to rock y'all. Being a wallflower is an insult to Dr. Spock's beats prowess. So get off the wall, if you're playing the wall.

Now, nearly every other reference in a Beastie Boys song? Sign me up for "got no clue."

Or:

"Gonna make a break and take a fake,
I'd like a stinkin' achin' shake
I like vanilla, cuz it's the finest of the flavors."

"Little Black Submarines" by the Black Keys. It's both the title and opening line of the song. The song reminds me of "Stairway to Heaven." What the little black submarines are about, I haven't a clue.

Just walked past a guy playing Crystal Blue Persuasion (Tommy James & the Shondells) on State Street, it was very pleasant, I've always liked the song. However, even after looking up the lyrics, I get the gist of the song, but the title phrase seems to make as much sense as Little Black Submarines. My best guess is that it some kind of aura, man.

According to this, the title either has religious significance or it's referring to meth.
