Believe it or not: Madison has 4th best drivers in U.S.

What are the things that puzzle, enrage, delight and tickle you as you go about your life in Madison?

Believe it or not: Madison has 4th best drivers in U.S.

I've read more than one complaint about Madison drivers on this forum and I've encountered a few of those idiots on the road myself. But Allstate claims we are the fourth best in the U.S. (based on the chance of having a collision).

Pat yourselves on the back, Madison drivers, you're the (4th) best

Maybe we just don't know how bad things can get. I was riding with a South African friend today and she commented how pleasant it was to drive in the US. I thought she was joking, but she explained it was so nice we didn't have herds of animals wandering in the road, she thought our pedestrians were far more orderly than in her home country where everyone just wanders all over, and, to her amazement, our drivers seem to observe the existence of traffic lanes. Seems at home people just drive wherever they see an opening.

Do you notice any commonalities in that top ten? Do you really think these are the most skilled drivers in the country, or do you think it's more a consequence of having relatively few insurance claims in small rural cities that move very slowly?

You wouldn't know it based on how high our premiums are.

When we moved here from Michigan, we were surprised at how low the premiums were.

This shocked me when I first saw it, but when you think about it, everything makes sense.

Personally, from everywhere I have driven Madison drivers are NOT even close to the best drivers in the country. It actually amazes me how some of the nicest people you will ever meet become selfish, erratic, and just plain obnoxious behind the wheel. However, we are one of the most educated cities in the Nation as well, which means that we are smart enough to avoid possible collisions by being cognisant enough to anticipate such behavior and get the heck out of the way.

That is when we're not sleep deprived or distracted by old people having fun.

Ninja speaks the truths of the Orient.

Drivers here are 'good' in the same way that my grandmother is 'good' at not getting into bar fights.
