The Todd Akin situation is odd and growing weirder. He has bounced-back in the polls, and is now in a statistical dead heat with Claire McCaskle, the Democratic senator.

How do the REpublicans pull-back a candidate who won primary, and remains popular with the electorate? They can only withold funds until September 25, after which they will of course have to open their wallets. (that is last date to get a new Republican on the ballot.)

Mary Matlin said they have a good candidate ready-to-go, a woman whose name I forget, that they can run as an independent. Ya, right, that will work.

It's almost like Rove's plan was to be worse than the guy taking the heat...

Talk about a blast from the past. I almost forgot about Akin. Now we've got a lovely tidbit unearthed from a 2008 speech on the floor of the House:

You find that along with the culture of death go all kinds of other law-breaking: not following good sanitary procedure, giving abortions to women who are not actually pregnant, cheating on taxes, all these kinds of things, misuse of anesthetics so that people die or almost die," Akin said, according to a CSPAN video highlighted by Slate. "All of these things are common practice, and all of that information is available for America.

Looks like Akin has a kindred spirit in Wisconsin:

GOP lawmaker explains 'easy rape' comment

A Republican Wisconsin state representative says his comments that "some girls rape easy" have been taken out of context.

Freshman Rep. Roger Rivard of Rice Lake told the Chetek Alert newspaper in December that his father told him that as a way to warn him that a woman could agree to sex but then later claim it wasn't consensual.
...
Rivard made the comments when he was discussing the case of a 17-year-old high school senior who was charged with sexual assault for having sex with an underage girl in the school's band room.

Wisconsin Family Action endorses lawmaker who made 'some girls rape easy' comment

A group that says it promotes family values has endorsed a Wisconsin lawmaker who drew widespread criticism for his comment that "some girls rape easy."

Republican Representative Roger Rivard of Rice Lake was among 45 candidates endorsed Tuesday by Wisconsin Family Action.

Wisconsin Family Action director Julaine Appling tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel her group endorsed Rivard because of his stance on issues.

Here is the latest pronouncement from a Republican politican.

Republican Congressman Joe Walsh of Illinois said after his Thursday debate against Democratic rival Tammy Duckworth that abortions are never necessary to save a pregnant woman's life, because modern technology has eliminated the risks of childbearing.

Walsh was defending his position that abortion should be outlawed with no exceptions, which is also the Republican Party's official stance on the issue.

I think that almost all people who can get elected to congress are pretty smart, they have to pass through a lot of filters. Most people misinterpret gaffes as stupidty. Joe Walsh isn one of a handfully of genuinely dumb guys in congress.

This is interesting:

Akin was Arrested at Least Eight Times in 1980's

Missouri Republican Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin was arrested at least eight times in the 1980s at anti-abortion protests, according to newly obtained records.

That is four arrests in addition to four the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported last month based on a review of its contemporaneous coverage of protests. The four additional arrests each appear to have occurred outside a women's health clinic in Ballwin, Missouri in St. Louis County between 1985 and 1987.

"Right Wing Watch," a project of People For the American Way, a nonprofit group critical of Akin's ties to what it calls radical elements of the pro-life movement, obtained incident reports on the arrests Friday from the St. Louis Country Police Department under Missouri's sunshine law, and provided them to National Journal.
